TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Posted: Friday, September 07, 2007 8:43 AM by Dan Fleschner

Note: This is the first installment of our "TODAY's Anchor Chat" special series. Every week, we'll feature a blog post from one of our anchors, giving some insight into their lives both on and off the camera. Today we begin with Matt Lauer, and next week, we'll check in with Meredith Vieira.

Remember when you got back to school from summer vacation, and your teacher had you write the classic essay, "What I Did on My Summer Vacation"? Well, today, I'm the teacher and Matt Lauer is the student. But I took it easy on him -- instead of making him write an essay, we did a Q&A:

Q: So Labor Day has come and gone, we're headed towards fall and summer is in the rearview mirror. Anything in particular stick out for you from your summer?

ML: After years of resisting, I finally relented and my family and I got a boat. Not a big boat. It's definitely a beginner boat. I thought it was going to be a time-consuming nightmare to have a boat, but it turned out to be the home run of the summer. We got an enormous amount of use for it. We went on picnics, went tubing, fishing, just had a lot of fun with it.

Matt was pretty excited when he made his first catch, a 7-inch sunfish...

Q: How big is it?

ML: It's a 19-foot Boston Whaler. Definitely a beginner boat.

Q: You say you resisted getting one -- who was putting on the pressure?

ML: My wife has been saying that it would be fun for the kids. I just thought it would be one more toy we didn't need, that you would take the boat out and be gone for half a day, then spend time cleaning it up and dealing with all sorts of things. But it turned out to be the kind of thing that could just be a brief diversion.

Q: Was fishing the best part?

ML: One thing you have to understand about me is that outside of my family and my work, I have two passions, both instilled in me by my father: golf and fishing.

My dad loved golf, and some of my best memories from being a kid are from spending four or five hours with him on the course. And that's probably why I love the game so much myself, that I have so many great memories of being with my dad.

We also used to do a lot of freshwater fishing, which we both loved. Now, I had already passed along golf to my son, Jack, who is six. He's hit some balls -- he hasn't played a game yet -- but he's eager and he loves it.

Once we had this boat, Jack said to me, "Papa, can we go fishing?" So I went out and got the rods we'd need so we could have our first fishing adventure together.

Now, everyone wants to achieve the "American Dream," and an important part of that is having kids and being able to give your offspring the chance to achieve it and even outshine you.

...but that was nothing compared to his son's first fish, a 20-inch striped bass.

So the morning of our fishing outing, I went in to Jack's room to wake him up around 5:15 a.m. I think he was already half-dressed, he was so excited to go. We were on the water by 5:30, and it was a beautiful morning on the bay.

We took the boat out to an area where I knew there would be good fishing. I would cast and he would reel (I didn't want to end up with a hook in my ear). Within about 10 minutes, we got a massive hit. I got the fish hooked and handed him the rod, and it was great to see this 6-year-old, 40-something-pound kid struggle with a 7-foot fishing rod and a fish on the other end.

We got the fish -- which was a striped bass -- into the boat, and he was literally leaping out of his life vest with excitement. I took out my BlackBerry to take a photo, but he refused to touch the fish. I had to explain to him that there was no way we weren't taking a photo of him with that fish.

Eventually, he agreed, and it's one of my favorite photos of him. Then we released fish, so I was able to give him a lesson in catch and release.

One major difference between when I caught my first fish and when he caught his, was that I was able to take a photo of him on the boat, email it to his mother (my wife), his grandmother, and about four other people at 6 a.m. By 6:15, I've got responses from all these people who were immediately able to share in this experience with him.

My first catch was a 7-inch sunfish. I never suspected that his first one would be a 20-inch striped bass. We all want things to be better for our kids, but did he really have to outshine me by that much? I'm a little afraid that everything from now on will be a letdown for him!

But it was great to be able to pass on this passion from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, my father is no longer with us, and I wish he could have been there on that boat. But I can only hope that my son will be on a boat with his child someday, passing the passion along again. And I pray I'll be with them on that boat too.

Great personal story Mr.Lauer! Our first boat was a 17 ft.Boston Whaler Montauk, it was the best! Easy to dock as well as drive, but most importantly it is UNSINKABLE!!!
Matt: I know you've been around the world, but the experience you and your son and family have and will have are as close to pure joy as it gets. Its also one that is repeated by hudreds of thosands of baoting families-a great story!
P.S. Don't miss the NY Boat Show...theres always great deals at the show...you're hooked now, bud'!
Great story and pics. This looks like a nice way to give us a little more about you folks we see daily doing your work.  Thanks
Great story!  Jack is adorable!  Please keep the personal stories going---they are so interesting and fun to read!
My first fishing experience was with my grandfather when I was 5.  We used to go out of on the fishing boats from Captree, LI.  As a joke, he entered me into the pool that day and with his help I won the whole thing:  biggest, smallest and most fish.  I was so proud when the Captain gave me a fishing certificate.  Years later, when we were clearing out my grandparents home prior to selling it, I found that certificate on the wall in Pop's basement workshop.  Bittersweet memories.

Matt, your Dad was with you and was beaming with pride.
Hi Matt: Great story! You keep on doing these great things with your kids, they'll remember them all! I had a big smile on my face early into your story, I have so many great memories of my dad & I fishing for perch in Lake Erie every summer.  It was some of the best time I spent with my dad one on one, we had some great times together!  Your a great dad!
Matt,
I have watched you since you came to the Today Show. I too lost my father several years ago and we too shared the love of fishing and (football). Trust me, your dad was there with you and precious little Jack. You are one of the few T.V. personalities that I respect. Don't forget to take your daughter also, girls like to fish too, and some of us actually like sports.
Keep up the good work!
You rock, Jack!
Matt, I knew I really liked you, but this is confirmation of that.  Anyone who likes to fish with their children can't be bad.  My dad liked to fish, but nothing fancy, however, I have been fishing with my husband since we met some forty-one years ago.  He has passed that love of fishing along to our son, who is 29 years old.  One of my favorite pictures of my son is him standing in the back of his dad's pickup after they got home with his stringer of "blue bass" (blue gills) at the age of five.  I think one of the best gifts I ever gave the two of them was a day of fishing with a pro guide in teh Inland Waterway and Mosquite Lagoon near Titusville, FL.  I wish you many more great days of fishing.
My dad did not have a son, so he taught me, his youngest daughter, how to fish - and I loved it.  I could put crickets and worms on a hook when I was six and will never forget those times with my daddy.
You will remember that day always Matt.
Matt, I too have watched you on the today show for years.  Your story about fishing with your son was a beautiful one.  My husband and I are 65 years old and are guardians of our almost two year old Great-grandson. My husband has already said he wants to take him fishing soon, to add to the great memories he has already given us.  Thank you so much for sharing this moment with your son with all of us.
Matt:
I spent my childhood summers in Henderson Point,MS, just outside of Pass Christian. My dad taught all five of us to fish, and we'd go fishing from either a boat or off of a nearby pier or bridge. Fishing isn't just about hooking a fish, killing it for bait or food, or tossing it back in the water if it's not the right kind. It teaches you about being quiet, being patient, and being careful with the hooks, the bait, and the fish, some of which have sharp fins (catfish), poisonous barbs (stingrays), and very sharp teeth (the occasional small shark). When we fished, we were often surprised with what was on the other end. Of course, there's the part where you have to scale, gut, and filet the fish, before you cook it.
Best of luck as you and your kids create your own traditions and memories, each time you go fishing.
Matt -
Thanks for showing us once again how 'real' you are and how you 'got reel' with Jack...now you need to bring him up to Alaska and "really reel" in some "REALLY" big fish - together!!
Matt,  when I was a kid I went fishing with my uncle, I had a stick with a line and a hook, and I caught the big catch of the day "My thumb". I am glad to see you enjoying your family, they grow so fast, these moments are what we treasure forever.
Matt-
Your story reminds me so much of my husband and his father.  We live in Jupiter, FL and they have fished those waters toghether for almost 30 years.  My husband has shared his love of fishing with me as well and hopefully he can share his love of fishing when we have children one day.
Matt,
Lovely fish story. Your father was on that boat with you, helping Jack get that 20" Striped Bass. Even though I am female,my Dad taught me to fish as a child at our summer cottage and we continued every summer into my 20's and 30's. My father is no longer with us, but I still love fishing,it always stays with you wwhen you have such wonderful memories.
Matt, if you read these comments, "BRAVO"  what a great Dad to relish in the free gifts that life gives us -- family!  You do a great job, and I watch your show every morning.

For some great fishing -- catch and release, there is no better place than Oregon!
Thanks, Matt. What a  great story, and a great reminder of the times I spent fishing as a kid. My dad put in a pond at our house in Virginia and stocked it with fish so we could go fishing any time we wanted. We would have barbecues down by the fond, while mostly doing catch and release. Finally, my dad bought a 19-foot angler so we could go out fishing on the Chesapeake bay. We spent many great summers out on the bay, fishing, crabbing, and just enjoying life.

Thak you for bringing back those memories!
Matt and Jack,

What a team. I know what it is like to see a smile on little faces. We have 4 beautiful children and they love the great outdoors. They love fishing and tadpole catching. This year they ruled out Disney (yeah) and we opted for the Mountain at Lake Lure. It was one of the greatest experience for us this year. Having just moved into a new home, children entering new schools and grades, meeting new neighbors, the trip was just what we needed. We climbed Chimney Rock, Kayak, Horseback riding, visted farms and enjoyed the sand at the beach. The cabin was breath taking. We could view the mountains from our back Deck and Lake Lure was tucked away around the corner. Matt keep up the great work on Today Show, you are the reason why I watch it. I don't normally write on blogs but when I realized who the subject was, I couldn't pass up the opporutnity to see what my favorite host was doing. God Bless you and your family and your Dad is proud of who you have become. Great job Jack!!!!!!!!

Matt,
I grew up living in Northport L.I. (off Long Island Sound) We went boating and fishing starting form when we were toddlers.
My dad was the proudest man in the world when I
obtained my 100 ton Captains license.
Take your kids to Montauk to see the boats landing
the days catch. Quite impressive.

If you're interested in getting your family involved in fishing, but don't know how to get started, there's a great program, called Take Me Fishing.... see their web site.  We've done three of their events, and we had a wonderful time!

Hello Matt,
Glad you are enjoying your first boat. I have a
17'6 seapro that I enjoyed with my kids here on the
Chesapeake Bay catching crabs and fish. Best decision
you made buying this boat. You will get alot of joy
with your family and friends. Enjoy it!

Hi Matt.. Parents look around everyday for the positives in news stories and so forth and lately there has been so much bad reported but I sat down with my little girl and we read your blog together and I realized that my decision to ONLY watch The Today Show, because you elicit class and the right perspective on things,is one of the best things I have done. PLEASE keep sending us blogs about your experiences...we watch you because you truly touch us every day. Thanks...
Reading this blog made me want to skip work and go out on the lake!  We are also a boating family...not so much fishing, but boating.  Our son is sixteen and he loves to tube and also can slalom; starting out on one ski. I bet Jack will learn to do that someday!! What I like about our boat is that we have used it for years and you never get tired of it. Plus when Jack becomes a teenager he will probably like having a buddy or two to come along...I really enjoyed the pics and especially Jack's fish!  Way to go! Our son also likes to drive the boat as well.  It's just good clean fun and a nice way for families to spend time together.  We really like Matt Lauer--
not meaning to gush but he is the best NBC has ever had.

Hi Matt,  I really enjoyed reading/seeing the atricle and picures of your son.  My husband and I took our two boys fishing alot when they were growing up.  They both are now taking thier boys fishing.  What memories your article brought back. My husband passed 13 months ago which made it all the more special to read.  Gave me "goose bumps" more than once.
  MATT :    I KNOW YOU ARE A WONDERFUL FATHER ;
I THANK YOU FOR PRINTING THIS INTERVIEW
AND PHOTOS ---WITH ALL THE TERRIBLE THINGS
HAPPENING IN THE WORLD , YOU BRING THIS

Hurray for a great dad, what Jack caught that day was a fish but what he'll remember is that he was with you when he caught it.  You are certaintly a hands on father. Thanks for sharing. Letty
Loved this story!!  Matt, I can remember fishing with my Dad, too. He also taught me how to ride a bike at 6 years old, and when I was 17, he taught me how to drive (stick shift!) down Second Avenue!!!  I will never forget any of these memories, and when I need a smile I think of them.  What a great gift you have given your son.
MATT: WHAT A WONDERFUL STORY.  AS MANY OTHERS HAVE POSTED IT BRINGS BACK SO MANY HEART FELT MEMORIES WHEN WE WERE ALL YOUNG AND HAD THAT EXPERIENCE WITH OUR DAD.

NEVER MISS "TODAY" AS I START EACH WORK DAY MORNING.
I HAVE BEEN WATCHING FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU, YOUR FAMILY AND STAFF EACH DAY.

Matt,
Thanks for sharing this wonderful story. Since golf is your other passion, I would like to invite you to our small town to play golf here where I work. It's a beautiful private club in SW Virgina.
P.S. Your wife is a smart lady!

Matt,
What a wonderful experience for you and your son, Jack.  I sure your Dad was watching all of this unfold from afar and is very proud of the Father you have become and for passing on a passion the two of you shared. I am so glad you shared this personal event with us.
Your story made me miss my father beyond belief.  Golf and fishing were his passion.  My son was only 4 when my Dad passed away suddenly.  Somehow he still remembers fishing with him in Islamorada.  Oh, and my son is now a golf professional at a very fine club.  It is in the genes!
From a faithful viewer to the best anchorman in the world!  What a good chat - Jack is handsome (just like his Dad). With a beautiful Mom and handsome Dad, what else would you expect?  You have such a good rapport with your co-workers and I so enjoy watching "Today" especially YOU, Ann and Al!
Thanks for sharing such a great story Matt!
Great story - Also enjoyed the interview with Tiki on Thursday!
Like a lot of readers, this brought back a lot of memories for me too. It makes me think of fishing with my Dad growing up in Alaska. The first time I cast into a river, and the first time I got my lined seriously tangled up with the person fishing next to me- my Dad having to bail me out. Thank you so much for your story Matt.
Wow, what a wonderful memory you made for your son.  And no doubt in my mine,or yours that your father was there to see and hear the joyous experience.

Sandy
Great story thank you for sharing it.
Matt...My Dad was a fisher of men and fish being a Minister.  He loved both.  My memories of fishing with him was our trip North to Minnisota.  He and mother packed everything in our old car and off we went.  Many times other family members joined us.  We enjoyed eating fish at dinner every night.  Dad could clean fish neatly, and without bones...and taught the children and grandchildren thus.  Being a girl, fishing was not as important as just being with Dad and Mom.  Then years later taking our children and Dad and Mom, and my hurbands parents... sharing three generations.  It is a wonderful memory, and I am sure you and Jack will have many more special times together. I hope and pray as much! The last time we took my Dad we had to take an oxygen tank...yes, even in the fishing boat that only held four people. Precious memories!
Thanks for sharing. Yes, we watch the  Today show every morning...faithfully.  Love the weather with Al and Willard....Merideth is greatly admired on the show as well as in her private life with the MS battle her husband is making. Going to four hours will be great...and Ann is one of my favorites...so sincere and interesting in her presentations. I will be watching.
What a great memory for you and your son!  One of my first fisting experiences was with my brother.  We went to the creek by our house on a Sunday afternoon.  I got the broken pole and caught the 9 pound carp.  I didn't get that pole again.  BTW, the whole time I was reading, I was waiting for the part when the antibacterial soap to come out.
What a great story!  No matter the difference in sizes of your first fish, the look of pride and excitement in your eyes is nearly identical.  Jack will remember this forever.
Matt, this is the type of story we don't hear often enough. Here's my own "Fish Tale" that I wrote right after a crappie fishing trip on The Lake of the Ozarks, Missouri.

FISHTALE
by Dan O.

In the morning dark I decide to embark,
to be ready at first sun.
My gear all sorted and ready to be ported,
it weighs about a ton.
At last at last I make my first cast,
just missing a waterlogged stump.
My retrieve is slow taking a minute or so …
then there is this bump.

I pull back hard stumble a yard,
the reel begins to sing.
I let him run he is far from done,
I don’t want to lose this thing.
My line is tight as he continues to fight …
there would be no surrender.
It’s a test of the best of the best …
I‘ve hooked a heavyweight contender.

The action diminished I think he’s finished …
time to claim my prize.
With great anticipation and some perspiration,
my hope begins to rise.
I’ll make a stab to nab the slab,
but what to my avail.
A final shake he’s back in the lake …
oh well, he would have broke my scale.

Hi Matt,
I'm happy to see that you and your family have a some-what normal life on the other side of that camera..
Good job Jack!!! Hope you can do it again...
Matt - what a great story!  It brought back all those memories of fishing with my dad.  We would spend summers up in the High Sierra's of California and would trout fish all day.  My brother and I were just toddlers when my dad would take us out to fish.  Thanks for helping me remember those wonderful summer days with my dad!
Your Dad was there Matt - who do you think sent the fish for Jack to catch?  Your Dad would be proud of you for being a great parent.
Thats nice but can we see more pics of you shirtless on the beach?
HEY JACK, YOU ARE ONE TERRIFIC FISHERMAN! THE MORE YOU DO IT, THE MORE YOU'LL LOVE IT.  AND JACK, YOU KNOW YOU'RE A TRUE FISHERMAN WHEN YOU GO FISHING, COME HOME WITH NOTHING BUT BUG BITES, AND CAN STILL SAY YOU HAD A GREAT TIME... JUST CAUSE YOU WERE WITH YOUR DAD.
My first boat was a 1973 Boston Whaler.  You never forget your first boat.  Your kids will remember this for years to come.  If you catch the fever, read some fishing and boating online blogs especially those from Florida.  You will learn a huge amount in a very short time.  Good luck.
I heart Matt Lauer! What a fun story!
Jack ~ well done big guy!  Next time ask your dad to let you keep just one to eat! Part of learning to fish is learning to clean & cook it too.

Matt ~ Don't leave Romy out of this experience. She will benefit greatly from the time spent with you as well. I loved fishing with my dad and the experience it provided and the closeness it created. My dad had 4 kids (3 boys, 1 girl) and he used to say, "I have three boys but my daughter is my only son." and that was because I enjoyed fishing, camping in the desert, dune buggy's, etc while my brothers stayed home in bed. Don't underestimate that even a "girlie" daughter might want to participate as well when she is old enough to.
p.s. see you on the plaza 11/4 - coming up to see Bon Jovi open the Prudential Center - I will be the one with the stolen hotel towel :-)

Annette ~ Way to go on the persistance!
