TODAY's Anchor Chat: Matt Lauer's Fish Tale

Posted: Friday, September 07, 2007 8:43 AM by Dan Fleschner

Note: This is the first installment of our "TODAY's Anchor Chat" special series. Every week, we'll feature a blog post from one of our anchors, giving some insight into their lives both on and off the camera. Today we begin with Matt Lauer, and next week, we'll check in with Meredith Vieira.

Remember when you got back to school from summer vacation, and your teacher had you write the classic essay, "What I Did on My Summer Vacation"? Well, today, I'm the teacher and Matt Lauer is the student. But I took it easy on him -- instead of making him write an essay, we did a Q&A:

Q: So Labor Day has come and gone, we're headed towards fall and summer is in the rearview mirror. Anything in particular stick out for you from your summer?

ML: After years of resisting, I finally relented and my family and I got a boat. Not a big boat. It's definitely a beginner boat. I thought it was going to be a time-consuming nightmare to have a boat, but it turned out to be the home run of the summer. We got an enormous amount of use for it. We went on picnics, went tubing, fishing, just had a lot of fun with it.

Matt was pretty excited when he made his first catch, a 7-inch sunfish...

Q: How big is it?

ML: It's a 19-foot Boston Whaler. Definitely a beginner boat.

Q: You say you resisted getting one -- who was putting on the pressure?

ML: My wife has been saying that it would be fun for the kids. I just thought it would be one more toy we didn't need, that you would take the boat out and be gone for half a day, then spend time cleaning it up and dealing with all sorts of things. But it turned out to be the kind of thing that could just be a brief diversion.

Q: Was fishing the best part?

ML: One thing you have to understand about me is that outside of my family and my work, I have two passions, both instilled in me by my father: golf and fishing.

My dad loved golf, and some of my best memories from being a kid are from spending four or five hours with him on the course. And that's probably why I love the game so much myself, that I have so many great memories of being with my dad.

We also used to do a lot of freshwater fishing, which we both loved. Now, I had already passed along golf to my son, Jack, who is six. He's hit some balls -- he hasn't played a game yet -- but he's eager and he loves it.

Once we had this boat, Jack said to me, "Papa, can we go fishing?" So I went out and got the rods we'd need so we could have our first fishing adventure together.

Now, everyone wants to achieve the "American Dream," and an important part of that is having kids and being able to give your offspring the chance to achieve it and even outshine you.

...but that was nothing compared to his son's first fish, a 20-inch striped bass.

So the morning of our fishing outing, I went in to Jack's room to wake him up around 5:15 a.m. I think he was already half-dressed, he was so excited to go. We were on the water by 5:30, and it was a beautiful morning on the bay.

We took the boat out to an area where I knew there would be good fishing. I would cast and he would reel (I didn't want to end up with a hook in my ear). Within about 10 minutes, we got a massive hit. I got the fish hooked and handed him the rod, and it was great to see this 6-year-old, 40-something-pound kid struggle with a 7-foot fishing rod and a fish on the other end.

We got the fish -- which was a striped bass -- into the boat, and he was literally leaping out of his life vest with excitement. I took out my BlackBerry to take a photo, but he refused to touch the fish. I had to explain to him that there was no way we weren't taking a photo of him with that fish.

Eventually, he agreed, and it's one of my favorite photos of him. Then we released fish, so I was able to give him a lesson in catch and release.

One major difference between when I caught my first fish and when he caught his, was that I was able to take a photo of him on the boat, email it to his mother (my wife), his grandmother, and about four other people at 6 a.m. By 6:15, I've got responses from all these people who were immediately able to share in this experience with him.

My first catch was a 7-inch sunfish. I never suspected that his first one would be a 20-inch striped bass. We all want things to be better for our kids, but did he really have to outshine me by that much? I'm a little afraid that everything from now on will be a letdown for him!

But it was great to be able to pass on this passion from one generation to the next. Unfortunately, my father is no longer with us, and I wish he could have been there on that boat. But I can only hope that my son will be on a boat with his child someday, passing the passion along again. And I pray I'll be with them on that boat too.

What a heartfelt story.  I am sure your father is watching the two of you and would be proud.  It reminds me of my husband and my son.  We all love to fish (we live on the Loxahatchee River in Jupiter, FL) and go boating almost every weekend (often pass by Tiger's new property in Jupiter - I know you love golf as well).  It is truly great to have the kids growing up on the water.  Great times.  Good for you and your family.
What a nice interview.  I really enjoyed this blog.  Although I am not a man, Matt's summer experience with his family and son with references to his memories with his own father, made me think of my fun memories of summers with my Mom & Dad and my own boys when they were young.  Thanks Matt, for telling all of us your heartwarming and real summer experience!
Way to go Jack!!
Matt, your Dad was on that boat. My eldest caught his first fish a couple years ago but it was my husband and I that had to be talked into touching the fish! Best of Luck on all your future fishing adventures.
WOW! What a great day this was for you.  My son is 24 and the relationship he has with his father and grandfather started on a fishing boat when he was a toddler.
Matt is just the sweetest, coolest guy!! What a great role model & super Dad.
Totally enjoy watching him every morning.
THANKS!
Dr. Judi,
Florida
Matt:  I've watched you on the Today Show since you took over as an anchor.  The more I read about you, the more you are admired.  This story brought back memories of my childhood and my dad helping me to fish off a dock on Caroga Lake, NY -- (my first fish, that I caught, he actually caught for me, but had me believe I did it ) -- I also just read another article about you and your family (sorry -forgot the magazine, I was flying) -- You are a great Dad, husband and human being.  Keep up the good work both personally and professionally.
I really enjoyed that wonderful story about Matt Lauer and his son's fishing trip.  I never hear much about Matt's personal life.  I always knew however that he is a very Wonderful and Special person. It is such a pleasure to hear such a memorable story about  childhood memories and strong family values.
Way to go Matt and Jack!  I pray that you will also be on that boat with Jack when the big day arrives.  Great posting to read in the morning.  Jim
Matt,
When you start a kid fishing by 10 years old they will fish for life.
Being from Staten Island originally I spent all of my summers casting from the beach and now at 59 still do whenever possible.
Soon, my book will be out about a boy and his fish tale. It's a story I always have needed to tell and it's for all of us from 8 to 108.
Keep at it and be  aware that the fall is the best time to fish for stripers and blues. Catch and release a few on the grill!
Nice going,
Ted Pietz
Franklin, Maine

What a beautifut family story.  Thank you for sharing something so personal.
Matt, I am thrilled for you and your son.  Fishing is a wonderful pasttime.  I also agree with "catch and release."  My husband and I fish for billfish in the Gulf Stream off the coast of North Carolina, and in the rare instances when we hook one of those big guys we always (photograph and) release.  But do you have any idea what good eating a striper is?  That is some of the best fish we ever catch!  Next time you can teach him the really fun (haha - kinda gross) part of fish- gutting and cleaning.  It is messy and tiresome but it's also a treat to eat your own fish.  Fish on!
How a great story, Matt. Even if he got a bigger fish his first time out than you did, it will be something for him to share with his children some day too.
Hi Matt   I watch the Today-show for a long time and I know that you are a good person and a very good dad. It is wonderful to see the way you raise your children.
Congratulations.    Liliane
Matt, Thanks for sharing the wonderful story and photos. As a primary school teacher, I can't begin to tell you how important it is to keep children connected with famiy history. Sharing activities and memories of your father with Jack helps develop his sense of who he is and how he 'fits' in the world. So many kids have no personal identity and seek this out with deadly consequences. Oh- take your daughter fishing, too!

My first fishing experience was not until I was past 40.  One of our dockmate in Ohio was an avid fisherman and took me out on Lake Erie.  I caught my first perch and he took a Polaroid picture of the fish and I.  He has passed away, but I always remember Tino and how he gave me an experience I'll never forget.
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL STORY. I REMEMBER ALL THE TIMES I WENT FISHING WITH MY FATHER AND FAMILY IN MINNESOTA AND SUCH A WONDERFUL TIME TOGETHER. MATT, I HAVE WATCH YOU EVERYDAY ON THE "TODAY SHOW" AND ENJOY LEARNING ABOUT YOUR CHILDREN AS THEY GROW UP.  GREAT STORY.  GOD BLESS YOU.
What a wonderful down to earth story. And he will like you Matt cherish the memory always, as well as tell his kids someday.
Matt, thanks for sharing your story.  It's great when kids are encouraged to enjoy the natural things in life.  Took me back to the day when my 6 year old daughter and I were sitting on a dock, on a lake, in Maine for her first fishing experience.  Saw a 7 inch pickerel take her bait while she was daydreaming. I set the hook and told her she'd better check her line.  She let out a yell, "I've got one daddy".  We still have a picture of her and her fish and I still get teary eyed looking at it. Her smile in that picture is the same smile that's on your son's face in his picture.  Keep up the great work.
It is refreshing to hear that in such a busy world, there is still time for the simple pleasures.
Hi Matt, loyal viewer here.  I loved the story.  I had my nephew with me for a couple of months and our back yard ends in small lake.  As soon as he moved in he started fishing, him and his friend caught 2 beautiful peacock bass...we will never forget the experience.  take care.
Thanks Jack for holding the fish.  That photo is the best!!
Hi Matt! Your story brought back a great memory of when my husband and I bought our first boat - a 24' SeaRay Sundancer (a little bigger than a "beginner boat" - but I wanted to be in something not so close to the water! LOL) You've already had one of the best days - when you bought the boat - the 2nd best day - the day you sell it! :)  But there's LOTS of fun inbetween the two! Enjoy!
What a great story.  Thank you for sharing.  I liked it so much, I shared with my loved ones.
Lovely memory for you and your son. I've always told my kids that fishing and golf, aside from the cost of the equipment are 'very cheap therapy'. Some of my best days either with my kids or alone have been on the course or the water. It's more about time spent with the elements in a calm quiet setting,a place to collect yourself, wonderful conversation with your kids, they let themselves go a little more in such a natural and neutral environment. Have many more days like that.
Matt,
Your Dad was definately with you that day and was laughing the whole time he put that fish on the line.  He was thinking, "Matt will just have to get over Jack catching a bigger fish!"
Thanks for being so real and making me look forward to watching morning TV.
We live in the New Orleans area and love fishing, there's a lot of that around here. My husband and I  took our son out fishing in our boat and now we have three grandsons to share the experience with. It is truly special to spend that time with family and they will never forget it.
Matt,
You can tell just by the way you light up when you talk about your family that they are your main priority. My children grew up with going to the lake every weekend and learning about boats and fishing. My father and husband have passed away but they are always with us. Your dad is with Jack don't worry about that. Keep being that father who even tho you didn't want to buy the boat did anyway for his family. It will come back to you over and over.
I have passed golf and fishing to my sons, too!  It's a real joy to share that kind of time with them.  I know how you feel.
The picture of Jack is classic!  Even if you hadn't told us that he didn't want to hold the fish, it is clearly stated in look on his face!  I'm with you Jack, YUK!  Great story, thanks for sharing!
Hi Matt,I really enjoy you sharing your story, not many dads share their time with their sons, you are a role model to other fathers. I have been watching you from your first day on NBC. God bless you as you continue to be close to your children.
Matt braged about his fish and also braged about the TODAY SHOW being 3 hours but for us here is Florida the show is rudely interrupted by Regis and Kelly at 9am and we have to see the last hour at 10am and it is not live.  If you wait till after 9am to do the wedding segment we have to wait till after 10am to see it.  Is there anything that can be done so we can see your last hour live.  Please put the wedding segment on earlier for us in Central Florida.
What a great story Matt! It is nice to know that you are dedicated to your family in the fast paced life that you lead. These are the things that matter most in life. Enjoy your children while they are young, they grow up way too fast!!
I love the picture with the sunfish--brings back memories of a summer trip my family took to Chautauqua Lake one summer--I spent most of the vacation catching sunfish--then throwing them back in. Thanks for the memory!
What a great story & photo...thanks so much for sharing a personal story.  Watching you every morning for as long as I have (not to mention the crush...lol), I feel as though I know you and hearing stories like this makes it so.  Way to go Jack!!!
Nice story Matt!!  I remember the first time I caught a fish--I was 8 and my mom and step-dad took me out fishing on our boat and I caught a flounder.  I was the only one to catch a fish that day and I was made captin for the rest of the day!!  Even though I grew up at the Jersey Shore (Tuckerton) and I'm now well into my 30's that flounder is the only fish that I ever caught.
Hi Matt, It's so nice to see a wonderful person like yourself enjoying your family.  So many famous people forget what's really important.

Being originally from N.J. my Dad and Grandfather loved fishing, they took the time as you did to create a life time memory for my brothers and myself.  Congratulations on being  a down to earth clebrity, but much more importantly a father with true family values.
What a wonderful experience!!
This takes me back to when I got married. I had never fished before and my husband had fished all his life.  So of course I learned to fish. We took our kids fishing and they have taught their kids to fish.  I am 67 and still enjoy fishing as much or more than I did then.
It is such a joy to hear of families fishing and enjoying each other, rather than fighting and hurting each other.  I hope you are there to enjoy Jack teaching his children to fish, and telling stories of his adventures with his dad.
HI MATT           Iam writing this with tears in my eyes, my dad passed away 2 weeks ago.... He was more than my dad, he was my best friend..... Your story  brought back memories of my dad and I fishing together..... We made many trips fishing and have  so many memories of them.... Anything from problems encountered to the fish we caught, ALL of them good no matter what.... At this time I don;t have children of my own but hope to adopt the son of a woman I love deeply.... At the moment they are 9000 miles away in China... When we come together, GOD WILLING, one of the first things I want to do with him is go fishing.... I wish my dad would join us, BUT I know he will be there.... Lastly I see you and your son are like my dad and I becoming best friends thru a timeless endeavor..... Don't ever stop doing this with him, let the bond grow and enjoy the beautiful relationship you created by it.
It was a beautiful story.I am a reader from the other side of pacific. It reminds my childhood with my father outing fishing and the life were gone.
I live in International Falls Minnesota and sometimes because we have such an awesome lake(s) and river we take fishing and boating for granted. This is definitely something families share.
Come and visit us in the summer or winter (when we ice fish)-- you won't be disappointed.
Matt,
Really enjoyed the story. It's a pleasure to watch a person succede and still stay well grounded. There is no substitute for spending time with your children. They always remember those moments as the most precious in their lives. My son and I still fish together when we have the chance. Stay true to your values.
Hi Matt,
What a lovely story...and I can relate as a Mom who's grooming my 4 kids, esp my daughters, on what's really important in life, spending good time with love ones.

It's so cool that your kids call you "papa", I have often wondered thru the years, since you became a dad.  I assume that this is how you referred to your dad.

Meredith is great and you guys are really good together!!
What a wonderful memory that you have made, Matt! I remember fishing with my dad and my grandpa, in Mo. at Table Rock Lake, and James River, around Cape Fair, Mo., when I was very young, then my grandpa died when I was a teen and then my dad died in a car accident in 83 and I still hold those memories very close and dear to me. My dad went on to make memories for me my kids until he passed. My oldest daughter and her children now live in Cape Fair, on James River and owns a bait and tackle-convenience store owns a store. I also took my kids and their kids and my mom (who just recently passed away, whom I miss so bad) fishing so they will have those kind of life long memories when I am no longer with them either. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! ANY QUALITY TIME YOU SPEND WITH CHILDREN IS WELL WORTH THE TIME AND EFFORT THAT YOU HAVE PUT INTO IT, THAT IS HOW WE MAKE GOOD MEMORIES TO HOLD ONTO BECAUSE IN REALITY THAT IS ALL YOU HAVE LEFT WHEN ONE PASSES. Sincerely,
I join everyone in saying that you are my favorite morning show host and love your "where's Matt" series--
Regretfully, fishing never was a big deal to me, but it was HUGE to my dad and the best fishing memory I have is when I was 3 years old and out on my dad's dingy with him at Spokane Lake (50 years ago) at 6am "looking for fish"--and wouldn't you know it, his motor fell into the water and he had to jump into the water and push us back because he forgot the oars--never caught a fish that day, but boy was it exciting for me!
Thanks Matt for your memories and for reminding me of mine.
And congratulations to Jack!  Well done, young man!
Dear Matt:  For me, fishing and fashion go together.  My grandfather brought a beautiful dress back for me from a fishing trip to Mexico when I was about 5 years old. I may not fish today, but I think that dress started my whole love of fashion!  Jack is adorable, and I am sure he will treasure this fishing trip with you!
Hi Matt, i am writing from the Philippines; it is so great to finally find a blog about you; I really like the fact that you're such a family man - I'm sure your kid will cherish such moments forever; Looking forward to read more of your blogs. By the way, in Manila,  we get to watch Today regularly, albeit delayed by probably 12 hours. Local shows here have imitated you but no one can ever match the brilliance of your show.
Matt,
It sounds as though you are a great Dad, but I wouldn't have expected anything less!  I hope you are able to accrue lots of wonderful days of boating and fishing with your son.
Patricia
That was a real nice story Matt. I've been military for 20 yrs, deployed all-over and spending time w/my 10 yr old son fishing (if he isn't casting a line he's playing around w/rocks and the likes) is a  lasting memory for both until our last breath. Thanks
Matt that was an awsome story. Thank you very much for sharing it with the world. I have been bugging my husband to sell our camper and boat this year as we didn't get to spend much time with it and I could see where we won't be using them to awful much next summer either. The kids are getting bigger & their lives are getting more busier, but the 8 year old still loves to fish with his dad! He would rather fish than breathe!!! They go out fishing every Saturday & Sunday morning all summer long when we get the chance. The older son used to love it just as much but now his intrestes are sports and girls ( he is going to be 14 yrs old this November). I truly think that our younger son will continue to love fishing all of his life so long as he gets to spend that time with his dad! I have a nephew that turned 21 this year and he still loves fishing more than anything. He typically goes to Jones Beach from April 1st until the summer where he enjoys fishing all summer long in the bays in Cape Cod where he catches  striped bass all day long. This year he took my older son with him to go fishing on the cape & he really loved it and caught a 28 inch stiped bass and was very excited about it. Thanx again Matt, I am not going to sell my boat now, there are way to many memories to be made yet!!!

Matt,

You are super duper!

Fondest regards,
Ana
