It's an emotional day for a lot of people in Great Britain and around the world. For us, it's a day to think back and remember where we were when we heard Diana had died. I find it kind of amazing that I remember exactly where I was, even though Diana had basically no impact on my life up until that point (I was in my sweltering college dorm room).

But today's memorial has not been without its share of controversy. Reportedly under pressure from Prince Charles, Camilla Parker-Bowles initially said she would accept an invitation to the event.

The public outcry was vehemently against Camilla attending, and she eventually caved under the pressure on Monday and said she would not come.

Her announcement came just hours after a column written by Diana's best friend, Rosa Monckton, published an op-ed in The Mail, saying Diana would have been "astonished" if Camilla were there. She wrote, "Now controversy surrounds the very service designed to give thanks for her life. And so, once again, I feel I should go in to bat on her behalf."

Can you imagine if she had actually shown up? This is a woman that Diana had called the "third person" in her marriage with Prince Charles.

All of our families have strained relationships that rise to the surface at weddings, funerals and other events. But this is arguably the most public family in the world, and everyone knows what happened between Diana, Charles and Camilla

As Diana biographer Andrew Morton told me yesterday, Camilla could have simply said that she would love to come, but that she had a prior commitment that, by gosh, she just couldn't get out of.

Instead, Prince Charles angered a lot of people, and it's left to Prince William and Prince Harry to try to smooth things over with their grace and humility -- two traits they inherited from their mother.

As Diana tragically died on my husband's & my anniversary, I think of her every year.  It is also the same year (in Oct) that my husband died.  So I also will be remembering him in this 10th year anniversary. Very sad day for me and many others who remember a beautiful princess and Mother.
My prayers and love go to Princess Diana's family.
Her soul is resting in peace and she was a wonderful caring person for all the chaitable work that she did.
I will always pray for her and her family.
I am English living in England and watched the ceremony today.  I feel relieved that Camilla did not attend and admire the way the two Princes have pulled the family through the service with such dignity - despite Charles' reported manoevring.  I'm not at all sure however that we can 'forget the past and move on' as requested by the Bishop of London but for the Princes' sake as well as the Queen's I may just try.  I'd like to see a statue of Diana raised though.
Not on this subject, but Matt, your interview yesterday with DeLay was great. You didn't back down as many interviewers do but went right at him when he gave the standard Republican "blame the liberal press" response to all of the current scandels. Right on !!!
The most wonderful memorial to Diana is the behavior of her sons.
Wlliam and Harry were wonderful today. Diana would
have been so proud of both "Her Boys". Here in the US
I have followed Diana since 1981 and even now I miss
her still.
diana died on my father's birthday,i will never forget.
I had just gone to bed after a labor day bbq w/ friends when Jim woke me to let me know that Diana had been killed. Soory that her sons had to grow up without their Mom's guidance, but she would be proud to see how well they grew up. May she rest in peace.
I am an American who loves British royalty, past and present.  I watched the service on TV this morning and have to say I was moved by Harry's words very much.  The two princes are wonderful figureheads of the next generation of the monarchy.

I agree Camilla's presence might not have been a good idea, so best that she didn't attend.  I was shocked that Fergie didn't attend though.

I remember watching young Di's marriage on TV when I was only five years old.  She mesmerized us all and her memory always will.
I am an Albertan in Canada. The service today was extremely 'Powerful' It left a distinct message to all families of the Love and Caring Princess Diana gave to her sons. William & Harry were remarkable and both are a wonderful tribute to their mother. They are the 'LEGACY' Diana has bequeathed to the world. Both sons have taken their stand in memory of their mother and are to be highly appraised. God Bless William & Harry. May they have a happy and rewarding life.
I haven't followed the British Royalty before. But when Diana became Princess I started to take note. Something about her interested me and said that "this lady will make a difference." She did and still does. Her sons are a true legacy that Diana would have been proud of.
I was able to view the Memorial for Princess Diana on MSNBC and it was beautiful. The music was just lovely and Prince Harry's words were so heartwarming and touching. I recall so well the time she died because that week of August 28th to September 8th 1997 was when my mother and I were in Paris on a trip. It was so very tragic. Princess Diana would be so proud of her sons. I hope all the best for their future. God Bless them.
i was a college student at university in philadelphia.  i lived in an 1800's three story row house.  very large.  my house mate was downstairs and actually screamed, then came over to the double stairway to yell up, "did you hear what happened to DIANA?!"  I was half-asleep and earlier in the night they had said Diana had broken her leg in a car crash.  i thought it was just more tabloid blunk.  i said, "yes," to my house mate, very bored.  my house mate got annoyed and got on the phone to call his friend jack in new jersey, to tell HIM and get a proper reaction.  i can actually picture my room, the lighting, and hear my house mate's voice.  in the morning i learned the truth and i was shocked.  i almost screamed WHAT?!  to which i received a smirk from my house mate.  i thought you KNEW he said.  i thought she broke her leg that's what they said earlier.
no one expected diana to die.  no one.  it was really weird.
My first vivid memory of Diana was watching her wedding on TV as a youngster of 10.  What possessed me to get up at 5am during summer vacation and watch anything that wasnt cartoons is still a mystery.  But I did watch and I was captivated.  From that day to today, I have admired Diana's natural flair for her extremely demanding and difficult job, her genuine care and compassion for those she knew and those she would never know, her breakneck-speed evolution from a shy teenage girl with her head down, doe-eyed and innocent and believing in happily everafter, to a stunning international ambassador, the standard-bearer for the oppressed, the afflicted and the rejected who grew up to realize there is no such thing as Prince Charming.  She did not sit on her fame nor take it for granted, instead she used it to improve the welfare and lives of countless thousands, maybe even millions.  Manipulative?  You bet she was!  She quickly grew weary of being the manipulated one by the press and the Royal Family and turned her command of the international stage to her complete advantage while using the attention she attracted to raise money and awareness for some of the most critical issues of the day.  She was the only kind of princess the world could have loved and respected at this time in history - she shook the establishment to its core and her influence, image and life force can still be felt and will continue to be felt for years to come....I miss you Diana.
Friday the Duchess stayed home. As well she should have.  Ten years on, Diana's sons have taken some time to remind family, friends and the rest of us that the only job constitutional monarchs and their families must fulfill is to stand for something positive in the public eye—in other words, to give good value for money as role models.  Arguably, at the outset of their marriage and for quite a few years thereafter, the Princess of Wales strove to stand for martial happiness and maternal devotion.  Denied the first role, the sad public spectacle of the marriage’s unraveling was, in the main, the surface evidence of a titanic private struggle for Diana to be able to accomplish the second.  She replaced the first with a new role, as she espoused human compassion. Yes Diana was a flawed, imperfect person—aren’t we all?  But this ten year anniversary of the end of Diana’s life suggests that the world will continue to note and appreciate Diana, long after those who strove against her are but dimly recollected marginal notes of history.
Charles and Camilla deserve each other, he should never be king or her queen.
William and Harry are the most two remarkable men on the planet, and great actors because their is no way they actually like that woman, you can tell by their body language and the inferences they make in their speeces.
william and Harry keep up your campaign to keep your mothers memory alive, and rub it in the horse faced, husband stealing unfeeling womans face every oppotunity you can, she deserves to feel all the guilt that can be bestowed on a person
Princess of Wales was a nice  lady, I WATCHED CNN  and the memorial service was  perfect, The  Hyms  and the music in THE guards chapel  was unbeliavAble, May  OUR BELOVED PRINCES REST  IN PEACE.

Seeing that you've posted one comment here concerning the interview with Tom Delay, I have another. As someone who has voted for Democrats and Republicans, I'm a moderate American who is looking for neutral reporting. Mr. Delay is certainly not my favorite politician, but he did have a point about the press relishing certain scandals. Thank you for keeping this blog neutral by posting both pro and con on the subjects at hand.
I wish Camilla Parker Bowles, the Adultress and Mistress of Cornwall, would take a very, very slow boat to China and take the insensitive and feckless Charles with her.

I admire Prince William and Prince Harry and their thoughtful tributes to their beloved mother, Diana Princess of Wales.
I knew Princess Di as a child (her mother rented a house from my father near our home) and some of her flaws were apparent then.
But she gave 'her boys' the best possible start in life and they will ensure her good points long outshine the bad.
To be killed by a drunk driver is tragic - but then she didn't always choose the best company.
I was in bed and then my grandmother called on the phone to let me know what had happened. It was soo sad and unbelievable. I still think the paparazzi had a lot to do with the crash.
I remember sitting on my couch when a news alert came on and a good looking young anchorman I had never seen before (Brian Williams)broke the news of her accident then a few minutes later death. It was the night before I was to go to the hosptal for the birth of my 3rd child. I had him and we were home 48 hrs later and spent our first night watching the funeral.
It was 2a.m. where I live in america . I awoke out of a deep sleep suddenly with the powerful urge to get up and turn on the t.v. as I did , I watched as the news media reported the dreadful news. I stayed in front of my tv for a week, not wanting to miss anything . I have always loved Princess Diana. She was such a good hearted, fun  person. I wish I could have met her.
The night Diana died I was at a BBQ for my oldest son's Little League Baseball team. We were all sitting around listening to the radio when the news was aired. You could feel the pain the world was experiencing in the silence after the announcement. Diana's sons are a tribute to her. Her charitable works are a tribute to all of us.
