Roast Dog Anyone?

Posted: Monday, August 06, 2007 11:59 AM by Noah Oppenheim

Much of the controversy surrounding Skinny Bitch is connected to its promotion of a vegan lifestyle.  Vegans are not only vegetarians, they also avoid all animal byproducts like milk, cheese, and eggs.  It’s not easy, it may sound a bit extreme, and I’m not sure if it’ll help you lose weight, but it’s a choice for which I do have enormous respect.

It’s my understanding that we can get all the nutrients we need from a meat-free diet.  And, there are plenty of vitamin supplements around if you want to be especially sure.  So, the only reason to eat meat is because it tastes good.  The only reason to eat a burger, as opposed to a veggie burger, is that we prefer the taste.

But, would you eat a roasted dog?  What if I told you it had the most delicious flavor you can imagine?  Most people find the thought repulsive, regardless of whatever culinary pleasure it might bring.  Why?  Because dogs are sweet, sentient creatures, and the thought of killing one simply for our enjoyment is abhorrent.  Of course, we only know dogs are sweet, sentient creatures because so many of us keep them as pets.  But, if you had the same regular exposure to cows, calves, lambs, and even chickens, you might feel the same way about them.

This all said, I eat meat.  In fact, I eat lots of it -- chicken, beef, lamb, even veal on occasion.  I have no plans to stop, but when pressed, I have to acknowledge there is no ethical excuse for the practice.  If you've got one, I'd love to hear it...

As a practioner of the pagan religion, I am all for saving the planet and not causing harm to anyone or anything including animals.  I have a beautiful angora siamese garfield sized-cat.  she is most definitely a witch's cat.  some people are a little ridiculous.  I eat whatever I feel like.  I buy food pre-prepared or in the supermarket to be cooked at home.  I don't eat red meat for health issues.  Once in a while I really enjoy a good ribeye.  It's not me that's doing the killing of the animal to get that ribeye anyway.  No, I can't eat something that was clucking in my backyard yesterday morning.  I am an animal lover!!
If someone eats an animal, she is responsible for his death, regardless of whether she killed himself. Arguably, saying someone else did the killing is a morally vacuous cop-out.

How you can anyone call herself an animal lover and still eat animals?
I really understand your position. I was in the same boat for many years. I had respect for vegans and vegetarians, but I never seriously considered becoming one. After 40 years I finally began to realize just how unhealthy I had become. I only wish I had become vegan years earlier. I enjoy food more now than ever before. Really, I do! I lost over 40 lbs. I go on twenty five mile and longer backpacking trips (could barely make it a mile with no backpack at age 38). I bike to work and back 20 miles every day.  I only changed my diet. All of the exercise started after I lost weight and all ready felt much better. I did not exercise at all to lose weight.
You should become a vegan. Seriously. The longer you try not to think about these issues, the more harm you're doing to animals in the meantime.

I became vegan a year ago, because I realized that eating meat just didn't make any moral sense. Why should I pay someone to do something I couldn't and wouldn't do myself? It took me several uncomfortable months, but I can't imagine eating meat again.
