Posh Spice Diet?

Posted: Monday, August 06, 2007 8:45 AM by Noah Oppenheim

Victoria BeckhamThis morning we took a look at Skinny B*tch, a diet book that rocketed to the top of the bestseller lists after Victoria Beckham, aka “Posh Spice,” was photographed carrying a copy.  It’s a craze I find ridiculous from top to bottom.

First, Beckham has since issued a statement saying she was only holding the book because she found the title amusing.  She didn’t buy it, and, in a statement, her publicist has implied it amounts to a “fad diet.”

Second, the women who wrote the book have what seems to be a very limited expertise.  The most qualified has something called a Masters of Science in Holistic Nutrition from someplace called Clayton College of Natural Health.  While she calls herself a “Nutritional Consultant” she is not a Licensed Nutritionist, the generally accepted credential of expertise in this area.  Her co-author is a former Ford Model Agent.  Which is nice, but last I checked, being around skinny people hardly makes one an authority on how they got that way.

So, to sum up, thousands of women are now buying a diet book because they think Victoria Beckham has endorsed it.  But, she hasn’t.  And, they probably presume the authors of said book are medically trained dieticians.  But, they aren’t.  And all these women are now killing themselves to follow a rather draconian vegan diet based on these misconceptions.

In fairness, I’m skeptical of pretty much any diet associated with a gimmicky name and a for-profit book.  It seems to me almost every respectable physician will tell you the same thing.  Losing weight is a simple matter of burning more calories than you consume.  Which can be accomplished by exercising more, or consuming less.

Sound good?  Now, all I need is a catchy title and Victoria Beckham…

This morning on the Today Show, Victoria Beckham was identified as a vegetarian. One of the things listed that she eats was fish.  Vegetarians don't eat fish. It drives me crazy when I say I'm a vegetarian and I get the question, "Do you eat fish?" If I ate fish I wouldn't have said I was a vegetarian. I'm not judging those who eat fish, I just don't understand the insistence of claiming the vegetarian label when it doesn't apply. I'd like to see those who want to eat fish come up with another name for eating non-land animals.  Then I can enjoy a night in a restaurant without having to explain what I eat and don't eat even after I've said I'm a vegetarian.
While I would not suggest that anyone follow an eating plan or lifestyle simply because some celebrity appears to endorse it, I rather resent the implication (of the blogger, VB, and the media more generally) that veganism is a "fad diet."  Quite the contrary, weight loss aside, veganism is a way of life for thousands and thousands of compassionate people around the world, and it has been endorsed by quite a few physicians and dieticians as a healthier way to eat.  Do not generalize criticisms of this book and these authors to veganism as a whole.
I think I should write a book called FAT BITCH!  I am overweight and could give pointers to those out there who long to be called a FAT BITCH!  I to have no degree that supports my ability to wite a book and give direction on how to gain weight, but I guess that does not matter as long as there is a catchy title.  It is so sad that our daughters have to grow up thinking they need to be a "skinny bitch"  come on lets get someone to write a book about how to be rich and successful and call it "rich BITCH with a college degree"
I bought Skinny Bitch after catching on MSNBC last Friday that Victoria Beckham was spotted with the book in hand.  I quickly read the book Friday night and have stressed all weekend about having to give up fish.  Thank you Today Show for clearing up this morning that Victoria Beckham does not follow a strict vegan diet and that she does eat fish.

I have been a true vegatarian (no fish, no chicken, no animal flesh of any kind which is what a vegatarian is) and now my daughter is a vegan.  Vegan eating can be done healthfully if done correctly with nuts and seeds, soy, and plenty of fortified foods, greens, and vitamins.  Those who think it's a fad don't know the commitment involved.  This is a dedicated lifestyle.  I admire my daughter and very glad she is not out there partaking in SAD (Standard American Diet) by grabbing hamburgers and fries at every turn.

I do eat meat now, but I buy meat from humanely raised animals who are fed well and allowing to roam.

If anyone thinks Skinny Bitch is radical, they should read "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair.  They will be vegatarian in no time.
I find the title - and the whole concept - refreshing.

For every 50 diet books - there is one that uses the "not so medical / not so professional" way to shed a few lbs. Nutritionist/PhD or not ... if it works for some girls - then who cares what it is called and how it is marketed. People should be responsible for using their own judgement on whether or not they want to follow a particular diet regimen (who cares what the name is).

Personally, I would rather read a book by two girls who have lost the weight and know how to do it (vegan diet or whatever) - rather than a certified nutritionist who can't beat the bulge himself.

The book is targeted for 20 & 30 something women (probably working women who want the no bs approach) - and I think the marketing is great!

Skinny Bitch - Well done .. stand out from the boring "21 lbs in 21 days" bs ... there are enough of those on the bookstands already.
To Diane,

Vegetarians who eat fish are called Pescatarians. There is a word for it.
Noah, with all due respect, I must disagree with you. I only wish I had discovered Skinny Bitch  earlier. After years of "fad" diets - which this book completely is not (it is a lifestyle) - I have finally lost weight, and I have kept it off! I have never felt better in my life. I purchased Skinny Bitch after hearing many of my girlfriends talk about how much the book just simply "made sense," was hysterically funny, and how it really worked. They were so right. I have now bought the book for my sister and my mom.
Yup, fishes don't grow on trees. Not plants = not vegetarian.

And, Cynthia, there is no such thing as humane meat. How is killing a living being humane?
Hi- I've been noth - meateater and non-meat. Sometime I eat fish, sometimes I dont. I reactually go with no fad, but with what my body tells me I need. If you are trying to lose weight, you really actually have to eat MORE. More sensibly at that, also. As long as you are exercising at your target heart rate for 20-30 minutes, at least 3-5 times a week, you should be fine. Its not about being SKINNY, it not about being FAT, it about being HEALTHY. You body is made to mast 100 years or more when you are born. Its like a car - only YOU are the one who can cancel the warranty on it, then everything will fall apart. I say you should see what habits to change, get a support person or group, and have enough inner strength to stick with it. As much as Rosie is a pain in most peoples ass, she DID start a great group that helped A LOT of people in losing weight and being more healthy in their decisions. To bad she didn't keep up with it herself. DONT LET PEOPLE CALL YOU FAT/SKINNY OR OTHERWISE! Take a look at your life, and make the changes YOU NEED to be a healthier YOU, so that you can LIVE LONGER, and be a happy person in doing so knowing you are doing this for YOURSELF! Good Luck to all :)
There seems to be a common notion that vegetarians only eat vegetables. On the contrary, vegetarianism has different leves or types. We have what we call Pesco-Lacto-Ovo Vegans or those who eat fish, dairy products and eggs. There are lacto-ovo vegetarians, or those who take dairy and eggs. And there are those who are exclusively shunning meat, poultry, dairy and eggs. It’s all about branding, an individual can chose what he wants to eat and call himself whatever it is that he wants to be called. No harm in that.

What is harmful is when people start to subject themselves to ridicule, societal norms, and popular belief. Fad Diets do us no good. You lose flabs easily, and gain it back quickly. In the end you still become the same fat person that you were, twice the disappointment. What people need to remember is that health is a lifestyle all in its own. There are no short cuts in losing weight.
