J.K. Rowling brings Meredith Vieira to tears

In her first interview since the final chapter of the Harry Potter series went public, J.K. Rowling revealed the secrets she could never previously discuss to TODAY’s Meredith Vieira in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Rowling covered all topics including the rationale behind her plot choices;  the character she saved and the ones she decided to kill later in the writing process; what Harry, Hermione and Ron are up to these days; her plans for the future; and the way Harry Potter has saved her own life.

Meredith’s interview with Rowling airs both this morning and Friday on TODAY and in a one-hour Dateline special this Sunday.

But to give you a little taste, allDAY talked to Meredith about the most poignant moments in the hours she spent with Rowling.

allDAY: So, after all you read about Jo going into this interview, what surprised you the most?

Meredith: I had read that she was not an easy interview; I think “aloof” was the word I read.

But I found her very much the opposite.  I found her warm, I found her charming.  I found her protective of her material, but not proprietary.

In so many other interviews she had to be guarded.  There was still this whole series and she didn’t want to reveal secrets before now.

allDAY: There were a few really delightful off-camera moments with Jo and the children during the interview.  Did any of those in particular stand out for you?

Meredith: She asked how many of us had gone to the last page first and a few of us raised our hands and she said, “How could you!,” (as an author would).  She was teasing the kids.

I love that she was so protective of them during the interview.  She didn’t want to spoil this book for anybody.  That spoke a lot to Jo, the person, not just the author.

allDAY: While she was quite concerned about not spoiling the book for anyone during the portion of the interview when the children were present, you also got a chance to speak with her one-on-one when went into more detail about the book and also spoke openly about her own life.  What struck you about that portion of the interview?

Meredith: She talked about Harry saving her, financially, and him being her touchstone for 17 years, that’s important.

She also said her biggest regret is not telling her mother about Harry.  At the end of the day her biggest regret is that her mom never knew about the books, and if she had she would have been at every book opening, every signing.  That was such a lovely moment.

allDAY: It was a story about her mother that actually brought you to tears at one point when the cameras were off….

Meredith: Yes, she had been talking about her mom having MS and a case where she declined very rapidly.  I starting talking to her about my husband having MS and I just connected with her on a special level.

We were just talking about the strength of character of people dealing with illness – not the caretaker, the person with the illness – and I felt a bond with her.  Then I was embarrassed because I started crying a little.  I said I didn’t mean to cry, and she said, “Don’t worry, I’m usually the one crying!”

allDay: Of all the things she talked about – and she talked about a lot! -- what are you most excited to share with the TODAY audience?

Meredith: I think they’re going to be most excited to know why she killed off who she didn’t, and the choices she made throughout the series.

Delightful interview with Meredith.  I would like to read a lot more about the "off camera" portion of the interview with Ms. Rowling.  This is where the really interesting and revealing part of a conversation shows a person's humanity and real personality.
Glad to read the human side of the development and writing of the story, and of the author. It helps keep the whole series in perspective, and understand "between the lines."
What happened in the years between the war at Hogwarts when Harry was 17 and the Epilouge when he is in his late 30's??    !!
Thanks for doing this interview it has been very worth while to know alittle more.
I just finally got my HP7 and I'd like to say that I've throughly enjoyed the book! Yes, I stayed up most of the night to read it. There were sad parts, but the whole of the book was great reading.
Thank you, J.K. Rowling for having written a story that is honest, strong and true to the characters you've built. Even if the nineteen year jump is jarring, it's good to know. Besides, I can always hope you'll visit the families in the future and write more books!
I was  wondering if Harry Potter would ever become a cartoon. I personally hate the cartoons on tv today.  I think saturday morning cartoon with harry potter would be a blast. Think of the endless show's that could be done..
It would be nice for her to write the book of how everything actually started. Before Harry Potter was born and what really happened to his parents and why it happened. To actually see what happened to first group of wizards who tried to go against the evil side. I understood it but really do not know what happened that the evil turned againt the school and concentrated on Harry as a person.  Like Star Wars did this past years, showed where the main chararters developed from.  Thank you.
I thought it was the most wonderful book of all of them.  Hats off to J. K. Rowling!!!
I've been a late arriver into the Harry Potter world, but what has always impressed me about Jo is that her focus is always, always on the children reading the books.

Whenever, she answers a question or talks to children, she appears to have such respect and concern for them.
Is Snape a vampire?
How thrilling that there is this much conversation and discussion about a series of BOOKS! It doesn't matter if you liked them or not, if you felt fulfilled at the end or felt more needed to be written, the fact is, this series has given this generation of children a gift they will appreciate for many years: they read books and can say "they were there" when a new 'classic' was created. Bravo, J K Rowlings!
It is a good piece to read. I wish Meredith would share more, and in detail.

I did not know about her husband, and my sympathies are with her. May Allah give you the strength to overcome your emotional hardships.
I have not quite finished the seventh book but I could not resist hearing J.K. Rowlings account.  I am so relieved that predictions that I made about the future for Harry, Ron and Hermoine actually ended up in the last book.  My entire family, including my youngest grandchild, disagreed with me.  They said that Ron and Hermoine would never get together and I must be crazy to think that Harry would ever marry "little" Ginny, afterall, she was the little sister he never wanted!  I am still reading so I must bid you farewell and Happy Wizarding!!! M.E. Dundas
I can't wait to see the interveiw! : )
I can't wait to see the interview!  Jo Rowling is a fascinating person, and I'm so inspired by her story and her novels.  It's nice to know that all the hype you hear about her isn't true, that she's very kind and enjoyable.
about wen do u do u think that the harry potter encyclopedia ? if u ever do make it ? and wat information would u put in their ? u dont have to tell me you know but i mean i really hope u do .....
well my email is Xspeed_Man@yahoo.com and well thanks for the potter series but i was really hoping for more on the series about harry potter and his friends and family . so continue the good hard work !
I can't wait to see the full interview! J.K. Rowling has managed to produce perhaps the most memorable piece of literature of our generation. I'm so thankful to be a true Harry Potter fan.
I am truly a Harry Potter fan and hope all the best for everyone involved in the story.
Thanks Sal of NY----I agree that to get children "of all ages" READING  again is truly important!!!!! Thanks for the inspiration.  I have'nt  gotten to the space in  my familie's "chain of command" to access to the book---but I need more time to digest as I'm a slower reader and "understander"----@ 73 yrs young, maybe that's not TOO bad.   Thanks again!!!!!
Fantastic book! Brillant, kept me up all night.
My daughter, whose birthday is also July 31, said that finishing the 7th book felt like her childhood was ending.  After finishing the first book at 10 or 11 she waited very impatiently for her letter from Hogwarts.  I believe she is still waiting.  Thank you Ms. Rowling. The interview was excellent.
I'm really inspired by J.K.Rowling and Meredith and her family. Meredith's husband wrote Blindsighted. My son has autism I look at him every day with awe. I really never saw him as anyone but himself. I never knew there were some that felt bad for me?  I have grown and learned so much from my son that its humbling. I still have not read blindsighted but want to. I am very interested in the ability of disablity.
Its very powerful. Ruth
I just wanted to say I finished Harry Potter 7, and I wanted to let JK know she wasn't the only one crying over chapter Thirty Four! I actually had to go get tissues, and I was trying so hard not to cry on the pages of the book because it was a library copy! I loved the book and I loved how JK was so protective of it. I had no idea what was going to happen before the book came out. Oh, and I would be one of those fans that will not rest untill I find out EVERY LAST DETAIL about Harry and Co.
I just saw the interview with Meredith and Rowling and I thought it was excellent, though I wished they had discussed more about the book than they had. i wanted to know more but i loved it!!! i am glad that I was introduced to harry potter, because now I can say I actually read a book I had dreams about what i read. I also can say that i have read a book I felt like i was there and saw it happen. Way 2 go Rowling!!
This last book felt like I was saying goodbye to some great friends i've come to love. It make me sad to think that there will no longer be a story as wonderful as harry to look forward to. but be sure taht i willbe reading them to my own child as he gets older. Harry is a great role model. Thanks for giving us a great thing to share.
the interview was too cool. i was in tears at lots of time when someone dies. i also cried a lot when i finished the book. there would be no harry potter. i love all relations . i want everything like that . preety sad that fred dies. i cried whole night after i read that.
