Behind The Scenes With Princes William And Harry

Posted: Monday, June 18, 2007 7:58 AM by Peter Giordano

(From Today Producer Matthew Glick)

People British PrincesMatt Lauer, fellow producer Joe Delmonico, and I traveled to London the third weekend of April for an NBC News exclusive interview with Princes William and Harry.  WATCH VIDEO. This was the first time the two have sat down with an American journalist.  It was an unprecedented opportunity.

With so many questions we wanted to ask and operating under a tight schedule with the Princes—there was a lot of preparation and planning that went into this one.  Matt, Joe, and I spent a great amount of time brainstorming areas of interest and questions to ask.

We were given complete access.  There were no constraints or ground rules in place for this interview.  At the same time we wanted to be respectful in our tone and sensitive to the tragedy of these two young men having lost their mother at such a young age.  We were also quite aware of the amount of time Matt had to sit down with the Princes.  The trick to eliciting the best possible and most meaningful answer to any question is all in the phrasing and approach.  And Matt made it seem easy.
Below is the transcript of some of Matt’s thoughts on the royal interview that you will read here and no where else:

Q: What were your impressions of Clarence House?

MATT - Clarence House as you know, it’s in the middle of London and if you’re looking for opulence and a regal setting it’s not quite that.  It’s actually a little bit thread-bare.  It’s a little understated.  There’s no gold leaf and marble and mirrors and things like that.  But it seemed like a fitting setting.

It’s got a beautiful garden out back, kind of a formal area with huge specimen trees, and it’s where I met William and Harry for the first time.  I think it was very carefully chosen so as to not have the appearance of a palatial retreat and so that all efforts were made to cast Harry and William in the light of being somewhat normal guys despite the circumstances.

Q: Was security tight?  Was security what you thought it would be?

MATT - I was kind of surprised as we drove up.  I thought we would have to face four levels of security, one barricade after another, bomb sniffing dogs and things like that.  Without giving anything away that might cause some crazy to go check this out for himself or herself, I thought it was extremely understated.  Perhaps there was a lot going on that I could not see but in terms of what was visible it was very low key.

Q: What was the most striking thing Prince Harry and William said to you?

MATT - I think their awareness (of when their mom was alive) of just how hunted she felt by the media was striking and disturbing.  The fact that they talked about being able to see in her mood as she would come home after being followed by the paparazzi, or to see her depression after reading something that had been written in the tabloid press about her that was unflattering or untrue, just how much it impacted her daily life.  You got the sense (not only for the fact that they felt sorry for what she had to deal with) it wasn’t very hard for them to fast forward and say now they’re facing much of the same scrutiny.

Q: Do Prince William and Harry remind you more of the mother or the father?

MATT - Oh you know, it’s hard to say because not having met either of them in person, it’s based on what my image of Diana and Charles is from the media and the videos.  What is striking is just how the image of these two young men is of eight and ten-year-old boys and was then confronted all of a sudden with these 23 and 25-year-olds.  They are strapping, good looking young men.  It was just a bit startling and to hear them and their personalities and sense of humor come out, I thought it was a wonderful reality check.

Q: What type of prep goes into an interview like this?

MATT - A lot of prep.  I am not the biggest royal watcher so I’m not well versed on every aspect the royal family.  A lot of prep.  There was a lot of reminding myself of the events of Diana’s death, what happened afterwards and where these boys have been since her death.  For the most part, in an interview like this, you go in over prepared and then you ask a couple questions and let the interview take it where they want to go.  I think their personalities drove much of the interview.

I will definitely watch the interview tonight because I missed the morning program. My husband and I were in London the week before the Royal Wedding. It was only a "rehearsal", but people crowded the streets to watch. Have been a loyal "royal-watcher" ever since. Am grateful for your coverage then and now.
I think Mat was an excellent choice for the interview; he is so pleasant to listen to, very natural. Great job Mat and for NBC making it possible.
I am an Indian from India who now lives in America....I have always been very very interested in the royal family and was very sad when Princess Diana died..I try never to miss a show on the royal family and I am looking forward to seeing the show tonight with Matt Lauer..since Matt is someone that I admire as well....I am sure this will be a great interview...Thank you Matt and the Today show.
Dear Matt, I watched the video of the interview with Prince William and Prince Harry and they are really wonderful young men. I believe that their mother Princess Diana should be remembered for being a wonderful mother and for all the good charity work that she did throughout her life. I will always remember that tragic death of Princess Diana because my mother and I were on a trip to Paris from August 28th through September 8th 1997. That was my one and only trip to Paris. I will always recall in my mind what we saw and what we experienced that next day. It is so very sad that she was so very young. But her sons have grown to be nice young men and are doing a great thing by having this concert for their mother's charities. May she be remembered always for all her good works and for being a lovely Princess. I look forward to more of the interview. Thank you Matt for talking with the Princes. Good Job!
What an excellent job to have Matt given the opportunity to interview the royal brood and with their impaccable manners of accomodating a commoner like Matt and the opportunity of the American public to watch this segment will be considered significant.
I could not believe it when I heard that Lady Diana had been killd. It broke my heart and brought me to my knees and I just sobbed for her and for her two young boys. So ahrd on her boys I know it was and I know that they miss her very much. When i watched your interview (Matt) I seen two very normal young men. I knw that their mother would be very proud of them and for he way they grew up.
They seem like nice young men.  Certainly they faced a very painful time when their mother died; however, as they said, they had each other.  This was and is a great blessing.
Great interview for Matt!  Looking forward to watching it tonight.  Would think Matt feels honored to be selected for the job.  These two young man deserve the chance to have some privacy...maybe the tabs will back off after seeing how well this interview came off
I am so looking forward to this interview! I still am a great fan of Princess Diana and she would be so proud of her sons. Matt was the perfect choice for them to do their first American interview with. Congrats on a job well done!
I have been a "Diana watcher" since the very beginning. I was deeply saddened when she passed and still cannot believe she's no longer with us. She was such a champion for England and her many charities that I'm thrilled that not only America but her home country still honors her memory.

I have had an utter sorrow for her two sons William and Harry since the beginning of their parents marital woes. I'm thrilled that we get to see a glimpse of a more human side of their lives and how utterly brave of them to let us all to see this as I'm sure it's very hard.

Mr. Lauer you really did a fabulous job making them feel comfortable. I think this allowed you and them to capture glimpses we might not be fortunate to see. I forever will hold them dear to my heart and I thank you for conducting this sensative interview. They are wonderful young men and I truly believe that their mother would've been very proud of them. Major cudos to you. I look forward to watching the full interview tonight.

Dear Matt,
Thank you for doing this interview with the boys. Their voices need to be heard. My hope is that they will be able to live on and love because Diana loved them so much and that is what she would have wanted. They also need to know that many of us have been deeply moved by their lives and we care a great deal about them and only want to see them happy. I hope they are close and take care of each other always.
What's with calling Princess Diana "your mom" each time Matt refers to her!  Not only is this an extremely casual and youthful locution unsuited to Matt Lauer, but it's disrespectful to Diana.  "Your mom" indeed!
What a superficial interview! The shots of the tabloids is just a reminder that America is only interested in who is dating who and who can party harder.  Matt, you asked only about popular topics instead of issues.  I really thought that this interview was going to be more in depth and informative about who these gentlemen really are.  At least my 14 year old daughter is happy.
It has been one of the most satisfying interviews I have watched. I smiled and laughed at every answer Prince Harry had. What a charm he is. Great job Matt. England will be very lucky one day with either of their leadership. I only wish the young generation here in American had similar to look up too.
I thought that this interview with the two princes had to be one of the best interviews I have ever watched, read, heard, so on and so forth! It was wonderful how open the princes were, and I believe that having Matt interview them was a wonderful choice; he is a very respectable man who seemed to respect the princes on not only the royal level, but the human level. I applaued Matt for being such a good reporter and showing the world the good, TRUE side of the two princes.
Dear Matt,
I'm watching Dateline and remembering how heartbroken I felt for William and Harry when Diana died. Watching your interview with these fine young men, I can only say, as a mother of two sons, how proud she (Diana) would be of these boys.

Ginny S.
Great interview. It's a fine line we all walk- adoring those two young men, wanting to know how they are doing, what they are doing, all about them because they are so interesting, charismatic, refreshingly normal, and yet, aren't we doing the very thing they wish we wouldn't? Pry? Snoop? Be curoius? NBC's ratings, I'm sure, did not suffer for this interview. My hopes are that people can stop reading the tabloids which so hurt Diana, and rather, focus on the positive aspects of these young men's lives. Support the concert, and the charities that they are starting, and stop giving the paparazzi fuel for thier greed driven fire. Thank you, Matt for a professional interview that was done in the "right" way.
What a delight to "discover" these wonderful young men. Didn't feel at all like an interview, more like a chat with new friends.  No more fitting memorial could be created for Diana than William and Harry.
The People's Princess blessed us all with her pair of People's Princes.
So beautifully done.  I am touched by the way that NBC/Matt handled the interview. It did not seem invasive at all, quite the opposite, very comfortable and honest.  I have such incredible respect for those two young men who have endured the worst that one can imagine and yet have successfully grown into confident, respectful and charming young men.  Thank you for providing us with a comforting and enjoyable view of two men whom we have all grown to love, through their mother's eyes.
Dear Mat,

Is there a way to contact the princes to give our gratitude??? and condulences?
Thanks Matt for an informative interview.  It must have been awesome to be able to sit down with William and Harry and have a conversation "like normal people do".  I believe that Diana would be very proud of her two young men today, she taught them well despite the never-ending pressure from outside the family.  Again, well done Matt.
Prince William and Harry are two remarkable young men. You can see the spirit of their mother shining through them. She would be proud.

Matt Lauer did a wonderful job in this interview. I enjoyed every second of it.
Matt described William and Harry as the "Prince Charmings".  Should that not have been the "Princes Charming?"

It is frustrating to hear the mistakes in grammar that make it on the air.  Isn't it the responsibility of editors to clarify language?
Brilliant show but very disappointing ending...to assume that ANYONE would come to her tribute/concert as Matt Lauer suggested...just for the MUSIC...to say that on national television was pathetic!  ANYONE who is priviledged to attend the tribute/concert certainly will do so solely to pay respect to a phenominal woman of our time.  I am amazed that Matt would even comment that anyone would attend simply to see "A CONCERT".  wow!
A very well presented interview. Matt was extrememly respectful with his questions.  The princes seem relaxed and comfortable with him which allowed them to open up about their feelings. Princess Diana would be very proud of her sons.
What a great job Matt!!! and what an honor to be with these two wonderful human beings who are so modest and down to earth. I just loved it, and to show how much love they had and still have for their mother. Thanks Matt for a great interview.
Wonderful interview... Could You please post the time and name of the concert on July 1. So we can tape it.. will be be out of town.

I thought the interview was fantastic! I felt the young men made a connection with Matt and they felt comfortable.
I think Prince Harry & William seem like amazing men. They appear to have set their goals and are accomplishing them. The Celebration of Princess Diana's life concert is well overdue, and her sons should be very proud of the efforts to honor their mom. They may not of had much time with her, but the time they had is a reflection of the men that they have become.  I am sure Princess Diana would be so very proud!
God Bless them both
Ranee Love
I just finished reading the book After Diana which tells us so much about these great boys that we now get to see in flesh, thanks to Matt Lauer. Diana would have been so proud!
The Royal Brothers were delightful!  I am very sad by the fact that after being so candid about all the awful, personal things that were written and reported about their Mother, and how much it all bothered them, the producers and/or Matt, himself, went ahead and re-highlighted them in detail. It went against exactly why they agreed to the interview in the first place - So that their Mother would be remembered for what she stood for and did for others, not what the media did to spin her personal life out of control. I wouldn't blame William or Harry one bit if they thought that once again their Mother's name was dragged through the mud!
Hi Matt,

Watching the interview, reinforces why I watch the Today show with you, Meredith, Ann, Al and the rest of the crew.

I thought your interview was very well done.  You questions were intelligent, poignant and thoughtful.  You weren't pulling a heraldo Rivera trying to find something that could be exploited.

It seemed to me that Prince Willian and Harry respected you as a person and as a journalist who is looking for the truth not something to twist.

The royals looked relaxed and seemed like typical young men with dreams and goals like any normal young man would be.

Thank you for conducting a very professional interview that was a pleasure to watch.  I do have one addtional request for the network.  I would love it if they would reshow the interview at some point.  I was teaching late, and missed the first 25 minutes.

To you and all of you the Today show, keep up the great work and I'm looking forward to more great interviews.

Thank you!!!!
Princess Diana would be so proud of her son's. They are the pride of Great Britain and all that she stands for!
Matt Lauer, sorry you have fallen through the cracks!
What an embarassment to the United States.
You were out of line when you assumed that they will have "GOOD SEATS" at the benefit concert for their mother.
It is times like that, the seperation between the good, the bad and just plain ignorant!
I once actually saw Princess Diana at an event,  I must say that she does not photograph well...she is so much more beautiful in person.  As a mother, I feel so much for her sons, they do her justice as a mother.  She has done well in all aspects of her life but as a mother she has excelled.  Her sons show that.
I to watched parts of this interview and was very impressed by the two "Princes". They are actually very down to earth young men who seem to have very good heads on their shoulders. While they have no choice in the matter of who they are and what they were born into, they seem to have grown into their roles with grace that I think their mother would be proud of. Ok, they have done some rather not so good things, but then who hasn't? And with the media watching every move they make I am sure sometimes they would just like to cut loose and do something wild. But for the most part I think they appear to have grown up to be very responsible & intelligent young men. Kudos to Matt for a very thoughtful & insightful interview.
i am very unhappy at the moment.  In the middle of Dateline the cable went out.  Therefore i only saw  half of the interview with William and Harry,  Will this program be re-shown anytime this summer?    I would like to see the rest of the interview
Thank you very much for the interview with Princ William and Prince Harry.I thought it was brilliant and I hope the American people can see how how genuine they are and also how down to earth they are. I am from the UK living here for a couple of years and felt very proud  to be British. Princess Diana would have been very proud of her boys tonight and also of the concert that they are staging in her honour.
Oh, yes and by the way I think William has a lot of his mother's features. What a striking young man. Not to say that Harry is not good looking. I just see so much of Diana in William.
It is absolutely nice to hear them talk and smiling. I was raised by my great-grand-parents with traditions of British. So I had always consider them as my Princes. Didn't get to see the interview but got to hear on radio. They are growing into the young men that their will be absolutely proud of. Thanks, Matt , for reality check of these boys. They are very handsome but their personalities are so "normal" as they said.
Dear Matt Lauer,
I think you did a wonderful job at talking with two young men who may someday be kings.  They are very down to earth, very aware of all around them and are very sincere.  It was a delight to see their "fun" side with each other.  I am mom to 3 boys who love to joke with each other, it's nice to see that with them also.  It was a very touching interview and insightful.  I was wondering how to drop an email to the royals also.....any way to do so?  Thanks for a great job.
Dear Matt, You did a wonderful job with the interview of Price William and Prince Harry. You not only showed the warm personalities of both of these young men but also helped us to get a glimpse of the Royal family that has never before been seen. Hats off to you. Sincerely, John Milek
What a privilege it was to hear the princes speak for themselves. Princess Diana did a wonderful job in nurturing her sons. I was up very early to view the royal wedding and have followed her with awe for years.  I too weeped with the world at her death.  However, I am so proud that her sons are carrying on her compassion and zeal for life.  They deserve our respect. Thanks for sharing them with America.
I think you did an incredible job Matt in interviewing the princes. You were sensitive, very creative with the time you had to interview them and reflected your own sense of humor as wonderful as theirs. I have to applaud you and the crew there at msnbc. Thank you.
I have always been fascinated with Princess Diana and her life.  Congrats on getting the first interview with the princes.  It was great and I look forward to the coverage in the future.
Can you tell me of all the books, etc., out there - what is "for real" if I wanted to purchase a book about Diana's life?
Very disappointed in the actual interview.  It did not live up to the hype.  Matt Lauer talked too much.  The princes were not shown giving their full thoughts on anything.  Listening to them talk about their lives was fascinating, but always cut too short.
After watching tonight and crying most of the time, I am really surprised at myself at how much Diana meant to me.  I was a child when she married and of course, stayed up to watch her get married on TV.  She was such an inspiration to me that I remember doing my senior research paper in high school on AIDS.  I ended up going to collage to become a RN. I love the medical field and remembered why tonight.  Now that I have children that are 6 and 8, I only hope that they have such fond memories of me as Will and Harry do of Diana.  I can remember as a child having a book on the table of when Diana and Charles got married.  After her death,  I tried to not read a magazine with something about them in it because of what their mother went through.  But the world loves them, and I am glad to see them honoring their mother with this interview and concert.  The world can only imagine what it would be like with Diana still in it today. I am sure it would be a better place. She would be sooo happy to see her beautiful sons being so proud of their mother and her accomplishments.  She will always be missed and her sons will always be loved by the world. God Bless you William and Harry.
I loved the interview. Only Matt could show these fine young men in such a down to earth manner. I respect the line of questioning as not being inflammatory or tabloid in nature.
Princess Diana would have been very proud of her sons and many people forget the wonderful job Prince Charles has done in her absence. This may not be a popular statement as many remember Princess Diana during this time, as we should. She was a wonderful humanitarian... But as William and Harry pointed out, the press has not always portrayed the royal family fairly. I beleive Charles is very much responsible for the humility and dedication these young men demonstrate.
Good Show!
As a media host myself, I have always enjoyed the quality of interviews that are conducted by the Today Show team. Matt Lauer is one of the best, and it was so heartwarming to hear from Prince William and Harry on all of these tender matters. I wrote a book, Mirrors of Love - In Acts of Courage, and honored their mother in this book for her incredible courage and contributions to society. I was given permission by their Uncle, Lord Spencer,  to use part of his eulogy in return for donating funds to Diana's Memorial Fund, and this journey brought me that much closer to Diana and these young princes. I had friendly contact with Andrew Perkins - the Executive Director for the Diana Memorial Fund - at the time, and he remarked at how the chapter on Diana helped to keep her legacy alive and meaningful. We have consistently donated partial proceeds to causes that mattered to Princess Diana with the book's sales, and watching the work that the Princes are continuing only inspires me further. Great job, NBC and Matt!
Excellent job by everyone.

Captured the spirit of Diana.  Congratulations to her for raising two fine young men.
I was amazed at the interview-- I enjoyed it so much! I'm a huge Matt Lauer fan- he's an awesome news reporter, very down to Earth. I can understand being their age, around their age, the importance of having my mom around. I can't imagine what it was like to lose her at such a young age. I'm happy Matt had this opportunity to interview them and I CANNOT wait until the concert- I plan on recording it so I can keep it for years and if I could be thre in person, I would. Princess Diana seemed like such a classy lady and that's all William and Harry want to show- their real mom
