Behind The Scenes With Princes William And Harry

(From Today Producer Matthew Glick)

People British PrincesMatt Lauer, fellow producer Joe Delmonico, and I traveled to London the third weekend of April for an NBC News exclusive interview with Princes William and Harry.  WATCH VIDEO. This was the first time the two have sat down with an American journalist.  It was an unprecedented opportunity.

With so many questions we wanted to ask and operating under a tight schedule with the Princes—there was a lot of preparation and planning that went into this one.  Matt, Joe, and I spent a great amount of time brainstorming areas of interest and questions to ask.

We were given complete access.  There were no constraints or ground rules in place for this interview.  At the same time we wanted to be respectful in our tone and sensitive to the tragedy of these two young men having lost their mother at such a young age.  We were also quite aware of the amount of time Matt had to sit down with the Princes.  The trick to eliciting the best possible and most meaningful answer to any question is all in the phrasing and approach.  And Matt made it seem easy.
Below is the transcript of some of Matt’s thoughts on the royal interview that you will read here and no where else:

Q: What were your impressions of Clarence House?

MATT - Clarence House as you know, it’s in the middle of London and if you’re looking for opulence and a regal setting it’s not quite that.  It’s actually a little bit thread-bare.  It’s a little understated.  There’s no gold leaf and marble and mirrors and things like that.  But it seemed like a fitting setting.

It’s got a beautiful garden out back, kind of a formal area with huge specimen trees, and it’s where I met William and Harry for the first time.  I think it was very carefully chosen so as to not have the appearance of a palatial retreat and so that all efforts were made to cast Harry and William in the light of being somewhat normal guys despite the circumstances.

Q: Was security tight?  Was security what you thought it would be?

MATT - I was kind of surprised as we drove up.  I thought we would have to face four levels of security, one barricade after another, bomb sniffing dogs and things like that.  Without giving anything away that might cause some crazy to go check this out for himself or herself, I thought it was extremely understated.  Perhaps there was a lot going on that I could not see but in terms of what was visible it was very low key.

Q: What was the most striking thing Prince Harry and William said to you?

MATT - I think their awareness (of when their mom was alive) of just how hunted she felt by the media was striking and disturbing.  The fact that they talked about being able to see in her mood as she would come home after being followed by the paparazzi, or to see her depression after reading something that had been written in the tabloid press about her that was unflattering or untrue, just how much it impacted her daily life.  You got the sense (not only for the fact that they felt sorry for what she had to deal with) it wasn’t very hard for them to fast forward and say now they’re facing much of the same scrutiny.

Q: Do Prince William and Harry remind you more of the mother or the father?

MATT - Oh you know, it’s hard to say because not having met either of them in person, it’s based on what my image of Diana and Charles is from the media and the videos.  What is striking is just how the image of these two young men is of eight and ten-year-old boys and was then confronted all of a sudden with these 23 and 25-year-olds.  They are strapping, good looking young men.  It was just a bit startling and to hear them and their personalities and sense of humor come out, I thought it was a wonderful reality check.

Q: What type of prep goes into an interview like this?

MATT - A lot of prep.  I am not the biggest royal watcher so I’m not well versed on every aspect the royal family.  A lot of prep.  There was a lot of reminding myself of the events of Diana’s death, what happened afterwards and where these boys have been since her death.  For the most part, in an interview like this, you go in over prepared and then you ask a couple questions and let the interview take it where they want to go.  I think their personalities drove much of the interview.

WONDERFUL interview of the two much loved members of England's Royals.
I feel love for them both as I did Diana and wish them well and happiness in their lives.
Kudo's for getting Matt to be able to be his relaxed self in this interview! Kudo's to you for this wonderful personal side of Will and Harry.
Dear Matt Lauer, I watch every morning I don't work. You are so easy to listen to in the a.m. - And I don't like ANYTHING in the morning! Anyway, I adore Princess Diana (I have a charcoal drawing of her as big as a curio cabinet) I was excited to see this interview. You're always very thorough.
Her sons' are very matured, aren't they and very well spoken. I hope they know their 'mum' is missed. Thank You for doing this for us Americans!
Sincerely,
Cilla Strickland
Dear Matt,

I am looking forward to the interview tonight of Princes William and Harry.  I jsut read your excert above.  I watched Princess Diana for years and felt a strong sense of loss for her boys when she died.  Princess Diana and I are the same age and I couldn't imagine going through the scrutiny that she had to endure.  So thank you for allowing us to get a glimpse of our "little princes" now.  It is truly a pleasure.  Unfortunately, they too have to endure the same scrutiny, but with their mother's blood they will be able to survive.  Best regards, Lyna'

I think it is wonderful that William & Harry have come so far after the      of their mother Diana thay should be very proud of themselves I know their mother would be & Holding a concert in honour of her with all her family, friends, relatives, and public watching on would really please her I think.

i want to email Prince Williams.can i get his email address
I am so excited you have elected to get this interview with the Princes. I am a royal watcher and I think young men have behaved in just such a manor as there mother would approve of. I think William or Harry would make a good king- thanks to their mother they both have the Common people in mind and seem to relate. They just want to be normal and have normal lives. I salute them both and pray and wish them well!
I believe that Matt Lauer has done something that many people around the world have been waiting to do - talk to Princes William and Harry of Wales.  Also, I believe that it is very mature of the princes to talk to an American journalist about the subject because this not only shows that the princes have become independent adults, but that America is capable of showing compassion towards those affected by tragedy without being boastful about it.

Congratulations to Matt Lauer and the Today Show on this great achievement.
I think Matt was a good choice for this interview.
Like many Americans this whole royal thing seems like something from a novel.  Matt let us understand that although a life of previlage William and Harry have had they have also like their Mom had to fight for their moments of privacy.   Let's face it if the world did not care anymore about princes and princesses etc. Where would they all be?  Thanks for a fun insight.
I have so much respect for these young men.... they have gone through a lot of tragic events in front of the whole world and still managed to show dignity and poise... if their mother was alive, she would be very proud of these boys.
I am so delighted that someone of Matt's expertise and class, interviewed the princes, and he seemed to have done such a remarkable job.  An interview of this kind, helps the American public to see the human side of the royal family, and so soon after the recent visit of HM Queen Elizabeth II to the US.  Good job, NBC
I watched the interview and was really impressed with how normal they were.  They seemed like average guys and it took me a minute to really understand that these are royalty.  They have been so over scandalized in their lives I think we sometimes forget that they are real people.  Kudos to Matt for a great interview and I look forward to watching the special on Dateline tonight.  I hope that the princes find peace in their lives, especially when it deals with the tragic death of their mother.
I have always been a big Diania fan and was simple crushed when she died.  I thought she was the most caring and lovable person any royal family has ever had.  Her sons have obviously follow the same grace and dignity their mum had and she would be so very proud of them.  She provided a very good foundation for these two young lads to build upon.  Whether royalty or not, they are two very caring and loving men, and everyone is proud of them.
Matt, you are a very well-rounded journalist. You've done a wonderful job interviewing the princes as well as representing American journalist. I'm sooooo glad it was you chosen to go to England.  I watch the Today Show every morning. I dred the day that you retire from journalism.  Keep up the good work!!!
Very fascinating. The Princes have held themselves together with such dignity through all of this. They are a very classy contrast to the out-of-control American stars we see arrested with DUIs and partying out of control.
Matt's interview skills are sorely lacking, and way too much space is wasted on the likes of him, Katie, Roker,Rosie, etc.......
Great Interview Matt!!
Truly enjoy seeing how these two bright princes live up to make their mother's legacy live.  This is the best way to honor her memory.  Maggie
My sister and I lost our mother when we were kids. Almost the exact ages of William and Harry.  I felt thier pain. I am so happy that they have managed to grow up and to be so centered and ok with themselves.  I'd like to as them for their prayers and wishes, that my sister and I can mirror their sense of each other, and draw our strength from our love. Pray that we are able to love each other and ourselves, and continue to show us how.
Thank you William & Harry- what an unexpected gift
I adored Diana and as a Canadian and a member of the Commonwealth I am a Monarchist!I cried when I heard she had died... I love hearing about the boys BUT I do not want to know everything they do. The deserve time that is theirs.. The Press is too nosy!
I look forward to watching the interview tonight.  I followed Diana's life from engagement to death and am pleased to see that her sons have grown up to be men she would be so proud of.  Matt is the perfect person for this interview as he shows compassion and humor and respect to everyone he interviews.  Great job to everyone at TODAY.
I have every book and magazine about Princess Diana and her boys.  During this interview, I felt like I was a "fly on the wall" and I was a part of this very intimate interview.  It was how wonderful William and Harry have become - dedicated to their Mother's memory and full of life, humor and exactly like she would have wanted them to become. Thanks, Matt!  You made my day
I'm not a huge royal watcher but in light of the incredible pressures they have been through growing up, not to mention some of the notoriously bad behavior of our own young celebrities here in the states for comparison, I am impressed with how these two young men have their heads screwed on straight. Paris, Lindsay and Britney should take note of what it truly means to grow up with so much priviledge that's not taken for granted. Well done, William and Harry. You set a wonderful example.
As I sat watching this wonderful interview of Matt Lauer with the princes, tears came to my eyes; Diana did a fantastic raising of them.  I have grandsons the same ages who are great human beings and I can't imagine them without their mothers!

I'm looking forward to watch the interview. I adore the pricesses of Wales and " Congratulation " of having them to show us the future king of England.
Time endurance in Diana's Passing for William & Harry is understandable. You can see in William & Harry what Diana was all about; "Untethered" Caring and Love without all the glitz.
The Common People saw that all the time and that is why Diana will never be forgotton and neither will William and Harry cause we see it in them too!
I am glad to see that wealth, power has not changed these two individuals.  Maybe Paris Hilton can learn something from these two?  Instead of going to jail and acting like a spoiled brat, she needs to turn on her TV, or blackberry, and stop calling the "View" and LEARN something about this story.
What a tribute to their mother these young men have made..not only by showing their poise and maturity in the public, but also to continue their mother's dedication to the public and helping others...she is very proud of them, I am sure-being a mother myself, I would be.  Perhaps they can teach others by example and what role models for young people to have.
A very good idea to interview both Princes, especially from a male interviewer. I can't wait to view it! I know it will be interesting and"down to earth".
i still remember the day they were married a typical cinderella story. I sat in front of my tv and was in awh over the wedding, i was 15 years old at the time and gave me hope for happiness then i watched the divorce things and was saddened by the loss of story book romances, then the death i cried for days over that she was one of the most kindest good hearted people i wish i could have met, even though people like me never get the chance to do so. I hop the boys realize how lucky they were to have a mom like that(even though i have no idea about behind all the fame).

I'm like Matt, insofar as I'm not a Royal watcher.
But, I do like Matt's disarming approach in interviews, and look forward to watching this evening.
Is that true that today I will be abel to watch this interview in Peru? at what time (my time)
Thanks

Ana Maria
I, like most other people around the world, am fascinated by the Royal family and lives that Princes Harry and William have led up to this point. I think Matt Lauer's charismatic and laid -back personality will set the tone for a great interview. I have set my alarm for 9pm tonite.
They appear to be remarkable young men.  No matter how the press or anyone tries to portray Diana in their books she will forever be the "queen of hearts" in a majority of Americans minds.
Mr. Lauer thank you for your efforts in bringing a wonderful story of Princess Diana and her sons.  When the tragedy of the princess's death happened it hit us very hard, even living in American but being from Europe.  Thank you for allowing the interview to evolve and for showing the poise and humor that the lads have.  God Bless and a job well done.

Iam so thankful for you interview and to you that hese two are turning out the way their mother was preparing them to be. My prayer is that God will continously put His arms around and make them His that some day soon they may see their mother again when the Lord Jesus return to take His own. May these two be among God's jewels.
I thought the interview was spendid.  Kookoes to Matt.  He asked the right questions, at the right time, it cannot be easy to be in such lime light, try to keep your dignity,  respecting the monarchy, and keeping your your distance, which was what Diana always wanted.  I named my duaghter after her, she's now 19
These two boys were born into the status of public service whether they wanted to be or not. Their father, their grandmother and great grandmother were and are public servants.  They live in fish bowls all their lives.  I am just thankful I wasn't born in their places with no vacations!  I wish them well in a difficult and demanding profession.
hey Matt..
we are regular watchers and were looking forward to seeing the interview this morning. You did well in conveying the personalities of these dynamic young men without being overly obtrusive into their rather unusual lives.
Who will be King? If either of them are King will the royals change? Will they be more open to thier adoring public? Will they continue the monarchy as i has been as they get older or will they change the monarchy? Will they modernize the monachy?
The Princes' have grown into handsome gentlemen whom their mother, Princess Diana, would be so proud of.  They put up with a lot with having their privacy invaded but seem to handle it royally.
Dear Matt,

I read the exerpt and am so looking forward to the interview. I hardly ever miss watching you in the a.m. You are a very gifted person and seem to always interview people with a lot of sensitivity and skill. I am so thankful that you were chosen to do the interview...( were you or did you volunteer? )

I wanted to let William and Harry know how deeply I loved their 'mum' - not because she was 'royalty', but because she chose to use her position to help others less fortunate. She was also an admirable example of the strong force for good an excellent mother can have on her children. She gave the simple, life-molding joys of motherhood a profound dignity in our me-first, lost-our-way age. I know she is watching over her boys, still. . .and she is SO proud. God bless you both.
There is NO one finer than Matt Lauer to have the honor of this royal interview.  Only Matt could make the young men feel at ease; only Matt has the respect of the entire world to do such an interview in complete respect of their deepest feelings...  Thank you Matt and NBC for giving the world such an opportunity.  You are the best...
Matt, I have to commend you for undertaking this interview. When Princess Diana left this world, my heart went out to her two sons. I can't wait to see this tonight and although we will never know why she died so tragically, we will be given the opportunity to finally hear these two fine young men speak openly about their beloved mother and how much she is missed. Unlike most kids, their predicament was such that they could not openly mourn their mother's death or even speak out their innermost emotions, but you gave them the best opportunity for doing so and bless your heart for that.  This interview is also very timely in light of the new book that is coming out on Princess Diana's life which I understand is not very kind. Once again, good job Matt and keep doing what you do so well.
It was indeed appropriate for Matt Lauer to do this interview.  He is one of, if not the individual who, to me, is synonymous with 'broadcast royalty'. Having been born and raised in a British colony, the royals were like an extension of my own family and I was always interested in their welfare. It really is a wonderful opportuity to see how the princes have grown.  I was a great admirer of their mother.  It could not have been easy for them without her.  I grew up not knowing my mother, and yes, my sister and I used to talk about it and cry every day.  Anyway, best wishes to the princes  and may they be the best they can be, in Jesus' Name.  Amen.
I am a huge Princess Diana fan and am always wanting to read up on anything that the Royal family abroad the ocean are doing.  I deeply wished I could have flown over there for the funeral just for respects.  I deeply feel for the two boys not growing up with their mothers.  I have some church business this week and will definitely record this interview.  Looking forward from Texas!
These two adorable little boys grew into fine young men.  Princess Diana would be glowing in extreme happiness.  So terribly sad Diana can only smile down from heaven upon them.
Thanks Matt for a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Diana's true legacy...two young men who exemplify honor, integrity, and grace. They are a blessing to all of us, not just the British subjects.
I too am fascinated by the whole Royal Family mystic!  I had the pleasure of seeing Her Majesty the Queen and His Highness at Jamestown Settlement in Virginia in early May. Diana would be pleased to see the wonderful sons she nurtured.  I am eager to see the special DATELINE tonight - if I can stay awake!
