Live From Studio 1A: Debra Messing Q&A

Actress Debra Messing stopped by the studio this morning to discuss her latest project "The Starter Wife," a television adaptation of the popular book. (WATCH VIDEO) After her segment, she stuck around to answer a few questions about "Will & Grace" and her new project:

Q:  How much are you keeping in touch with your "Will & Grace" castmates at this point?

Debra: Well, I've been out of the country for many months, so e-mail has been our main source of communicating. Everyone is traveling all over the place, so that's the way we're able to keep up with each other.

Q:  Any "Will & Grace" reunion talks in the work at this point?

Debra: No one has approached us yet. I don't know (laughs).  I think they'll probably wait at least until the year mark before considering that!

Q:  What was it like to shoot "The Starter Wife"  in Australia? Was it strange because the story is set in California?

Debra: It was great.  I fell in love with the country.  All the cliches are true.  The people are robust and fun, and good-spirited, hard-working.  The crew was incredible to work with, and you know we were there for 4 months, so we were really submerged and we got used to having kangaroos hopping across the set.  It was also sort of surreal because the entire story takes place in Malibu, California or Beverly Hills, California, so to be making Australia our hometown essentially, was a constant source of comedy for us.

Q: "The Starter Wife" is not a full-fledged comedy, but how is the comedy in that program different from the comedy of "Will & Grace?"

Debra: Well, the tone of the piece really sort of carves out what kind of comic tone it has.  A sitcom is 22 minutes in front of a live audience, and the genre is such that there are set-ups and punchlines.  The joke is everything and it's your job to make people laugh.  And you don't have that much time to do it in.  In "The Starter Wife," we shot it like a film, we shot it out of order, it was 4 months, 6 hours worth of film, so there was the luxury of time to tell the story.  So I think the comedy comes out of character more and there is more of a balance between the drama and the comedy.

I am a 54 year old grandma, still going strong that simply loves Ms. Messing. She could do a sitcom/movie/show about sitting still and watching the wall and I would Love her ( and the show). Bernice Miera-Hylton
When we saw Debra tape "Ned & Stacy" in LA, she is ever bit as warm and friendly in person as her lively characters. Wonder if she's seen former fellow actor Thomas Haden Church (Ned)perform in Spiderman 3?
If ever a good movie is to be done about Lucille Ball, Debra is the one to play Lucy. Her mannerism and abilities are Lucy all over the place. I still like watching Will and Grace at night.
Hello & Greetings from Tucson!: Debra was absoutlely wonderful on Will & Grace and from the looks of the previews of the Starter Wife, She'll do just wonderful here as well. Also, Debra and I share the same birthday. Of course, she is younger and sooo much more prettier. You Go "D" Girl!!
I am a working 63 year old wife, mother and grandmother that loves good comedy. I just recently rewatched the final Will & Grace show - still brings tears of laughter, as well as tears of sadness that it is over...... Donna Foster
I love Will & Grace and every character on it. Don't ever stop the re-runs. Debra is to Grace as apple pie is to America-GREAT
I want her hair! LOL :) lisa
I always loved Debra on Will and Grace. I, too, thought she was the modern day Lucille Ball. She pulled off the slapstick so wonderfully. She's gorgeous, but had no problem making fun of herself. Good luck with the new show!
i love will and grace and its for everyone because for so long my b/f wouldnt watch it because it was also about gay people as well but as soon as he really paid attention to it he laugh his butt off. so thanx to debra and the rest of the will and grace cast for making him more open minded in life.
I loved will and grace, need more shows like it. All they show any more is crime or law shows, which i cannot stand. Go get them Debra best of luck
I have been in love with the Will and Grace show from the start. If they ever take the re-runs off then someone can expect to get a nasty email from me. They have not received the credit that was due to them over the years for the outstanding job they do in making us laugh but they are all stars!
loved "The Wedding Date".. have watched it at least 50 times, Debra is the best!!!
Debra is an amazing actress! I think her potential is unlimited. From what I hear, the Providence native is just as nice in "real life"
It is fascinating how much Ms. Messing looks like Lucille Ball. She is a comedic genius.
Keep up the good work, Debra!!
i too think grace would make a great Lucy if there should ever be a movie about I LOVE LUCY she is it i love you and the show Jack and Karen also and yes Will too.Good luck to you all
I just loved Will & Grace and am really anxious to see Starter Wives. Debra is wonderful in all that she does.
debra messing is fantastic. She is the Lucy of our generation. I love watching Will & Grace because she is so good at what she does. I will watch this show just because she is in it and it will be great!
I fell in love with Will and Grace after I saw one episode. After that I was determined to see them all! I love Grace's beautiful red hair as well as her wit! My boyfriend even watches the show with now and he laughs as much as I do!
Debra is a one of a kind. She is beautiful without being uhber human and has a screen presence that only skill and dna can provide. She was the girl in Will & Grace you always wanted as your girlfriend. Her warmth and genuineness are impossible to hide. Thanks Deb for all those years of Will & Grace, and for being a real lady in a business swarming with empty headed bimbos. You brought us great joy and laughter every Thursday night. I only wish Will & Grace could have gone on forever. My wife and I would roll with laughter. Thank you Debra Messing. With all the laughs you brought in to our house I feel I owe you something in return. I guess for now it has to be a genuine thanks and best wishes to you and your family.
Debra is really a great fun loving person. I wonder if she is like that in real life? All the cast of Will & Grace complement each other. I watch the re-runs every night. I missed the final episode and would love to watch it.
I am a huge Will, and Grace Fan.. But My Father and I always thought that Debra would be a dead ringer to play Lucille Ball. Just an idea, but the hair the comedy, and she does trully resemble her physically in some ways. If it happens I'd love to see it Lucille is another one of my favorite actresses
Has anyone bothered to ask why this project was shot in Australia since it is set in California? Was it a money issue? Did California not have enough qualified individuals to make this movie? Outsourcing?! When Americans are unemployed in the tv/movie industry, you have to wonder why projects are leaving this country?
i love will and grace , cant go to bed until i view this show . you go girl do your thing.
Debra, please come back to TV! We miss your style of comedy.
Debra I loved watching you in "The Wedding Date" ...wow you were great! Keep up the great work for you truly are good at what you do! P.S. I loved Will and Grace as well.
I am sooooo happy to see Debra Messing back on the small screen! I am a huge Will and Grace fan!
I loved Will and Grace, and I am sure Messing will be fantastic in the "Starter Wife." kudos, and always a fan.
Will & Grace touched us all.....in one way or another. You could not help but laugh at EVERY episode. The casting was fantastic!! I wish them all the best of luck. Waiting patiently for a Reunion show!!!
I still am watching the reruns of Will and Grace on Lifetime I love it so much will miss it when I can't get the reruns. I love Grace's hair as well, she is so beautiful to me. The entire Will and Grace crew work so well to make us laugh its a shame its all done.
Has anyone noticed the extraordiary likeness that Debra Messing shares with the English actress of the silver screen, Margaret Lockwood? Check it out.....amazing.
I am a 66 year old grandmother who just loved Jack in Will in Grace. What about Jack?
Hey Debra, If you wanna play Lucy, I wanna play Ricky. Please have your Studio contact me. Sincerely, Dr. Bob
I always wonder why such good comedy has to come to an end. All you see these days are reality shows, which are so boring. I think the producers should find a way to continue Will & Grace--one of the best ever comedies!
