Lester's visit to Walnut Grove

Posted: Friday, May 18, 2007 1:00 PM by Robert Ciridon

(From Lester Holt, TODAY Anchor)

The little house is gone. As is the church that doubled as a schoolhouse, and Oleson's Mercantile. And who knew the creek that "half-pint" occasionally fished in never existed at all but was rather a piece of Hollywood magic? Yet the ride up a dusty trail past the Oak tree dotted hill where little Carry Ingalls takes a tumble in the show's open left no doubt I had arrived in Walnut Grove, the home of "Little House on the Prairie."

This weekend on TODAY we're beginning a series asking "Whatever happened to?" and so this occasion was a chance to catch up with many of the cast members from the long-running series "Little House on the Prairie" -- one of the last true family-oriented primetime TV shows. Its 9-year run on NBC, based on the stories of Laura Ingalls Wilder, told the story of a frontier family as they endured the hardships of living on the Minnesota prairie. For television the prairie was actually a movie and TV ranch about 30 miles north of Los Angeles, which is where I met up with 8 of the cast members. WATCH VIDEO

Among those able to join us: Karen Grassle who played Caroline Ingalls, Alison Arngrim who played Laura Ingalls' rival Nellie Oleson, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Oleson, aka actors Richard Bull and Katherine MacGregor. The gathering proved to be a trip down memory lane both for the cast members and those of us there who grew up watching "Little House."

As I sat interviewing them several thoughts struck me including how well they all look after all these years, and how many of them mirror some of the personality traits of the characters they played. I also learned a lot of things about the show I never knew. Here's a piece of trivia I'll answer in my report Sunday: One of the younger characters was actually played by two actors -- a set of twins -- who would alternate scenes. Can you guess which character?

Only a few of the cast members are still acting, while others have found success off screen. To a person, however, it was clear: the memories of working on "Little House" are something they deeply treasure. They laughed about the time Mrs. Oleson dumped a bowl full of eggs on Mr. Oleson, and Laura and Nellie's tumble in the mud as if they had happened in real life. They also spoke with deep respect as they recounted what it was like to work with the late Michael Landon. It was obvious "Little House" was a family show both on and off the screen.

All of the cast members I spoke with rejected the notion that a show like that wouldn't make in today's television landscape. They might be right. More than 20 years after the show's run on NBC ended, "Little House" has found huge success overseas and on in DVD sales. Can you say reunion show???

Hello everybody !! I have waited for so long to see some of the LHOTP cast reunited in Simi Valley... And now I have the pleasure to see Katherine MacGregor and Richard Bull as well !!! It is really a wonderful gift for Little House fans like myself !! Thanks for making this mini-reunion happen ! Eric.
Dear Lester, I do remember watching "Little House on the Prairie" when I was a child. I always liked the show and even as they grew older I enjoyed it even more. I believe that the character that was played by a set of twins was "Carry Ingalls". I hope I am correct. Anyway, I do miss that show and all the great messages it would bring about in the episodes. Looking forward to the report on Sunday. See you on the weekend Lester!
I still watch "Little House" nearly every morning here in Kentucky. It comes on at 10 AM and again at 11 AM. Although I have seen each and every show repeatedly, I will always enjoy watching this family.
I love to watch "Little House" in reruns and have not gotten my 10 year old daughter into watching it with me when she can. We have also bought the series of books and read them recently. My daughter did a book report for school on the biography of Laura Ingalls Wilder. It takes us back to when times were "simpler" and respecting others was a major underlying theme in everyday life. I love this show and always will.
This is truly a magnificent event. Thank you, Lester! You will certainly have the LHOP message boards humming on Monday. By the way, where does a report stay while on beat in Walnut Grove? I hope they don't stick you in the loft.
I know I'll be watching the report on Sunday (or taping it at least). I am only 20 years old, but I enjoy watching reruns with my grandparents. Hallmark Channel and TV Land brings "Little House on the Prairie" into our home everyday. Thanks for the memories NBC!
I'm so glad I saw the commercial for this upcoming story. Little House on the Prairie was one of my favorite shows as well. I believe the character played by twins was Carrie (played by Linsdsay and Sidney Greenbush?) Thanks again for catching us up on the characters. (I always felt sorry for Nels Oleson!)
I am so addicted to LHOTP! I am so excited about this reunion! I watch this show everytime it is on the air, which on my cable provider is 4 times a day! Thank you for not forgetting about such a family classic. I'm sure this show had a huge influence on people from my generation, and I'm glad someone is finally going to reunite the actors/actresses that, even though in character, still has a huge impact on my life TODAY!
A show like LHOTP cannot be redone because it was a pioneer in its own right wrapped with all the possibilities of true friendship, love and loyalty. It embodied what we should be living like in our own hearts. I still watch the show; know each episode but watch them again and again with excitement and am so thankful that it's still being aired. I wish there were more shows on TV like this one...
There were three sets of twins in the show and here they are: Lindsay & Sidney Greenbush as Carrie Ingalls: 1974-82 Wendi & Brenda Turnbaugh as Grace Ingalls: 1978-82 Jennifer and Michelle Steffin as Rose Wilder: 1982-83
Hi there! Thank you so much to the makers of this reunion, and to the Little House cast members who got together again! It's absolutely amazing and wonderful to see Katherine MacGregor & Richard Bull again (aka "Harriet & Nels Oleson"!) after so long! I live in England, but hopefully a friend of mine in the States will tape this for me! Thanks also to my friend Eric Caron, who sent me the link to this page! :-)
Oh, no. I have missed seeing this as I was having my tires rotated. Please show it again. This is one of my all time favorite shows. They are timeless. I have always wanted to know What Richard Bull and Katherine MacGregor were doing now. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. Lester and Campbell you do a great job and it is alway a pleasure to watch you. Good luck to both of you.
It was great seeing the cast members of LHOTP. I remember watching the show as a little girl and still enjoy watching it when I get a chance. I hope I can get my little girl to enjoy the show as well. Thank you for doing a update on the cast .
Our Thanks to NBC for re-visiting the LHOP phenomenen. The story of Laura Ingalls Wilder is alive and well in her eight museums scattered throughout the midwest and upstate New York. Visit them in Burr Oak, Iowa; Pepin, Wisconsin; Spring Valley, Minnesota; Walnut Grove, Minnesota; DeSmet, South Dakota; Mansfield, Missouri;Independence,Kansas and Malone, New York. These Museums receive NO FUNDING from HarperCollins publishers or the owner of the copyrights for the books (which generates millions of dollars each year). If you want to help, e-mail HarperCollins and tell them to start a fund (even a small one would help)to sustain these museums that keep Laura's legacy and principles alive. Thank you for your help!!
I am beyond excited to see this reunion! I watched Little House as a little girl and now watch it my 6 yr. old who enjoys it so much! It's a wonderful show that teaches such great values. :)
Little House rocks.....and is my absolute favorite tv show. In fact, I named my oldest daughter Laura.
Lester - Thanks for the new segment, "Whatever happened to?" I think it will be a wonderful addition to your great show. Little House on the Prairie was a terrific family show. Michael, Karen, and all the actors were great. I miss Michael Landon and John Ritter. Remember John as the preacher? It is very unfortunate that there are no family shows left on TV. Family shows could help our society, children, and country alot. Thanks for the memories!!!
I had to retire early to care for my ill wife. I can not recall how many times I have privately thanked Michael Landon for the many, many hours and days of wonderful therapy he has provided for my loving wife. Mr. Landon was truly blessed with a real gift of caring that we can all appreciate. Thank you Lester for doing this show!!
OH I hope that you all put the interview on the web so that I can see it!! They don't (for some dumb reason)broadcast the Weekend Today Show on Sunday's here. I love Little House and have all the dvd's! I so hope it goes on the web!!
I have to agree with what Michelle Lewis posted here. "A show like LHOTP cannot be redone because it was a pioneer in its own right wrapped with all the possibilities of true friendship, love and loyalty", she says. She is right. Although there were miniseries versions of the "Little House" saga that aired in recent years on CBS and ABC, they did not have the heart and soul of the TV series that aired on NBC. For me, the Michael Landon version that airs daily in my area four times a day (once on KDOC-TV 56 in Los Angeles, twice on the Hallmark Channel, and once on TV Land) is the preffered version.
yes i love that movie and yes the twins where carry ingalls'i watched it all the time i still watch it on cable.
Thank you for this series called "Whatever Happened To...?" Even though it's only two days old, you can be guaranteed I'll be tuning in each day of the weekend to make sure I don't miss the latest installment. The LHOTP spot was a wonderful trip down memory lane. We are eager to see what next weekend brings. I love the "Where in the World Series" but I have a feeling this is going to top that for my husband and me who love nostalgia. Thank you for this fun series.
As a resident of Dover, AR I'm also not able to watch "Where are they now? Lester's updating of some of our beloved LHOTP cast members. It would've been nice to hear them now. Any chance on this being reaired some- time??? I'd like to thank all the cast with us and gone for the wonderful entertainment and example they set for us all!! :)
I just saw your piece on Little House. It brought back such great memories for me from when I was a child. It was my favorite show on TV and I still find myself watching reruns with my daughter. It does resinate with tv of today and I would look forward to a reunion show. Thanks Lester
LOVED THE SHOW! WHAT HAPPEDENED TO THE OTHER TWIN THAT PLAYED CARRIE- ONLY ONE SISTER WAS THERE. WHAT ABOUT MELISSA SUE ANDERSON- WHERE IS SHE NOW? EXCELLENT SHOW AND EXCELLENT REPORTING!
I grew up with Little House! I took my own children to the Actual - "Walnut Grove " In Minnesota. Yes there is a real "Plum Creek"! But the land is very flat , not hills or mountains like in the TV show! If you go to visit there- be sure to read the Little House book that pertains to Walnut Grove. You can actually find what is left of the "sod house" and the "big rock" and there is a neat Little House Museum!
I am a third grade teacher and one of our big units is Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books. Kids love it today, just as much as ever! We dress up and relive those pioneer days every year on Laura's birthday and finish with the original movie with Michael Landon. Teachers all over the country make trips to the Laura sites. I taped your show for my friends. So glad I caught it while I was grading papers. Susan Gilchrist, Monticello, Iowa
I loved the show and still love it, as a child when we heard the music we ran to the television, even if I was on punishment that was all I asked if I could still look at. Now my husband who really didn't watch it growing up is hooked on the show. Micheal and that cast made a lasting set of shows that never go out of style. THANKS!!!!!!
Lester, Thanks so much for gathering the cast of Little House on the Prarie, a show I grew up with and loved. I would love to contact Richard Bull, as he is a descendant of the William Bull & Sarah Wells family from Orange Co, NY of which I'm the genealogist. If you could help me contact him, it would be greatly appreciated. Judy Wood
I Love watching Little House because it is a good family oriented show. I still watch the reruns on t.v. today & it seems like I'm back home when I watch it!!!!
Let us hope that a show like LHITP would air for our next generation! We need wholesome, moral shows that our children and grandchildren can grow up on and idenify with. Children don't need sexual insight and adult explanations! They need to play outside and find adventures, not waste away at video games. My hope is that television would travel back to when children can be children and parents become the parent. The best tv show for families that was ever made. We learned to love and idenify with all the characters and hopefully help mold our children into better adults and citizens. Where God was applied in everyday through faith and family was loving and close.
Little House is my favorite show of all time! I remember watching in the hospital after my daughter was born in 1981 & how comforting & at home I felt. Later, we took family vacations to DeSmet, SD, and saw an outdoor play about Laura, and went to Missouri to see her adult home. I have a library of books about Laura. Hope you have a prime time reunion show to look back. You would have a hugh audience. Thanks for this look back.
My friend called me this morning to tell me about your reunion show. I grew up in a family of five girls and we watched LHOTP every Monday night with a box of Kleenex handy. It is absolutely my all-time favorite show and I still watch the DVDs and re-runs. It was great to see some of the actors and actresses and know what they are doing now. I've seen Melissa Gilbert in many t.v. movies, but to me she'll always be a little girl in pigtails with buck teeth!!
I love Little House as much now as when I was a child. The story lines are timeless! I definitely would watch a reunion show.
I Love LHOTP very much. I also grew up watching it. Every Saturday Morning Hallmark has LHOTP from 6 until 10. Of course I set my VCR every friday night so I can watch. I sure hope they will make a reunion show Thanks Lester for letting us have this trip back to walnut grove.
This was such a treat! Little House was, and still is, a wonderful FAMILY tv show. There aren't any shows like that out there today. It would be nice to see someone try and change this trend. I often wonder if Michael Landon were still alive, what he would think of the Real TV shows of today.
Thanks for showing the reunion of some of the cast members of "Little House on the Praire". I watch the re-runs most every day at 10:00 and 11:00 am and again at 4:00 pm. I would love to see a reunion show.
Why is it that Melissa Gilbert and Melissa Sue Anderson never seem to show for interviews?
FYI THERE IS A WALNUT GROVE MN THAT IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED THEY DO HAVE A LAURA E. DAYS
Hi, all! I'm so glad to know others feel the same way I do - that Little House is true "family" programming. My fiance and I have already discussed purchasing DVD's so that we can share the laughs and lessons with our own children in the future. One question, though: The "Carrie Ingalls" twin, Rachel, is living an admirable life, but there was no mention of the other. What is she doing now? Just curious...
I grew up reading the Laura Ingalls books so when they made a television series on the books I was thrilled. I loved the show and then when my husband and I got married we watched the show in reruns, we learned alot from the show about marriage and raising children. We named the first of three sons Michael after Michael Landon. Our three sons grew up watching the show also, they learned some very important values from that show. It was GREAT to see some of the stars from the show that I had not seen for a long time, Katherin MacGregor for one!! I loved the piece you did on one of my favorite shows!!!
Can you run some photos of the Little House cast members today? My wife missed the video of Lester's story. Could you run some video clips? I am 45 years old and HAD TO WATCH the story. What is up with the two Melissas???!!! Are they "too cool" for this update? I don't think that they were "unavailable" for this update story was good enough of an explanation. The video story was NOT long enough. Maybe you can run a longer edited version on TODAY again. Actually you could run an hour special on NBC. People would watch! We would love to hear more "inside stories". Great job Lester and staff putting this together! Thanks, Joseph
I saw what happened to LHOTP and thought it was really neat. It would be great if you could get the other stars at a reunion. I have often wondered what they are doing now, and what they look like. I still watch it daily at least four times a day. It was one of the greatest shows on tv.
Hi Lester Thank You for bring back yhe most important television show in my growing up years. I am 42 years old and I grew up on the Little House series, both on tv and reading. I have all the seasons on DVD. I also have done three scrapbooks on Little House, one on Laura Ingalls Wilder herself and then two on the tv show. I love to look at them. I hope they can get a reunion show together.
Thanks so much, little house is as was my favorite show. All were such good actors suited to their roles. so down to earth and real.
Thank you Lester. We Love Little House. I also watched it whele growing up. Our house now is all about it. I bought the DVD for my family 3 years ago and my daughter hasnt stopped since. She was Laura Ingalls for Halloween, then Mary Ingalls the next year with her glasses. She gets a new season for each Bday and xmas now. We are on Season 6 and have seen them many many times. Jesse Rae watches it WHENEVER there is nothing else going on. My 12 yr old son gets caught up in it too. It has the best values. WE have learned a lot by watching it again and again. Little House Rocks.
Thankyou to Lester Holt and NBC for putting together such a wonderful story. Seeing the cast members on your show, who all look so wonderful, brings back many warm memories of the past for your viewers who watched the show. I hope those in programming at NBC take notice of how well your story has been recieved by fans and move to have a reunion show made. Can you say Big ratings!!!!

I OVERSLEPT AND MISSED IT! I'm sick. I have wondered for years about the Ingalls' son Albert, played by Matthew Laboryteau. Lester, can you repeat this on Today during the week, and can you find out what happened to Albert, my favorite character.
