Whatever Happened To: The Little House on the Prairie?

Posted: Friday, May 18, 2007 1:00 PM by Robert Ciridon

(From Anthony Galloway, Burbank Bureau Producer)

I've just returned from the set of "Little House on the Prairie."  I know what you're thinking - the television show went off the air more than 20 years ago (and in the final episode the people of Walnut Grove blew up the entire town.)  Granted, the buildings are gone, but the prairie is still there.

Today, many of the show's cast members were there, too.  They traveled back to the prairie from cities far and close for an interview with Lester Holt. (Read Lester's Blog) Many of them hadn't seen each other or been back to the prairie since the show ended.  As the interview went on, I could see in their eyes how much the prairie meant to them.  It wasn't just a piece of land or a temporary set built for television.  To them, this was Walnut Grove - a place where some of them grew up and others grew older.  As they walked around the property with Lester, certain trees, roads and obscure landmarks would bring back memories.  Like the famous hillside at the beginning of each episode where the Ingalls daughters are running downhill.  Rachel Lindsay Greenbush, one of the twins who played Carrie Ingalls, told us part of that "show open" was actually an accident but was left in the show because it was so genuine.  There were lots of memories like these.

The actors are now involved in various endeavors.  Some are still acting, others have moved away from the industry, one has become a doctor and another, a comedienne! A few have married and started families.  Today the actors came together just like a family.  Despite the absence of that little house, for one afternoon, they were home.

Do you have any special memories of Walnut Grove and the Ingalls family? Let us know, and don't miss Lester's visit with some of the "Little House on the Prairie" cast when it airs this Sunday on TODAY.

Loved it then! Love it now! We need more wholesome, not violent, non sexual, none cussing shows. I'd love to see more shows turned out that has the qualities that Little House had, and still has. A 2 hour reunion would be well received! I just wish I could afford the DVD's of the series. These were all decent shows: Little House, Bonanza, Lost In Space, Highway to Heaven, and many others.
I was so glad to catch up on some of the cast members.Like thousands of others I too grew up with LHOTP.I believe that a reunion show would go over splendedly {I know I would watch}. I think we all miss good wholesome shows such as this. Thanks to all who made this show a happy memory for us too!!!
I grew up watching Little House and as a 2 year old asked to watch Prairie on the House. I still try to reserve everyday at 1:00 to watch the reruns on local tv. Everything I ever needed to know I learned from Little House! The shows and their messages are timeless. I can't forget to mention the books. They are wonderful. I hope the young girls of today still read them. They can't find a better role model than Laura Ingalls Wilder.
I first fell in love in grade school with the wonderful books that Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote. I now live about 1 1/2 hours from the house that Amanzo and Laura lived in at Mansfield, MO. They both died in Mansfield and are buried there. Whenever I have visitors, I take them to see the house and museum. Thanks to you for reminding us of a show that was family friendly. An interesting fact: Amanzo was 5"4" and Laura was 4"11".
Our 1st grade teacher (St. Judes, Mahtomedi MN) read us the book & then it became a series. We couldn't wait to watch the show every Monday night. Now I am reading the books to our daughters & plan to go to the real Walnut Grove in Minnesota this summer. Brenda (Jakubowski) Johnson
I am very proud to have Laura Ingalls Wilder as my Great, Great Aunt and Carrie as my Great, Great Grandmother and they have played a big part in my life. It is remarkable to see what the show has brought to us and accomplished through the years and also inspired so many of us to watch and read her books. What an outstanding job with the creation of the show and watching it as a child, a time I will always remember and treasure. My husband and I will have something to look forward to, passing my family history down to our own kids someday. Born in Rapid City, South Dakota, watching the show and reading her books, sure gave me a true appreciation of what "Little House on the Prairie" was all about... a bit of family history in my lifetime.
I love Little House On The Prairie. It is truely my most favorite show EVER!! It's on the Hallmark channel every morning and afternoon for 2 hours and I never tire of them. I have watched Little House Shows over and over again, AND, love them as much as I did the first time I ever saw them. I still get all misty eyed and choked up. Little House is a wonderful, wholesome family show. It's really sad that we don't have more shows on TV today like this. Thank God for Reruns! Michael Landon was the best thing that ever happened to television. Thanks Mr. Landon and the Cast of Little House on The Prairie for bringing such enjoyment to so many homes for over 30 years! Thanks Today for the reunion of Little House On The Prairie.
What a treat to see a mini-reunion from one of the best shows ever on television. If only we could have shows like that today instead of some of the junk that's on currently. My kids grew up watching LHOP and The Waltons and still love both shows (HOW ABOUT DOING A SEGMENT ON THE WALTONS?) Two family shows that showed family values, morals, compassion, faith and lots of things that are truely absent in today's selfish, crime, blood & sex filled, politically correct shows. Our kids are growing up now thinking all of these things are common & OK - any wonder why they have so many problems? They need something to help build a foundation for their lives with lasting value. Thanks for such a great job, please bring them all back for a real, longer reunion show.
"Little House" was more than just a TV series. The characters were members of your family and you would watch and hope and pray, and cry and laugh along with them each week. In the 70's, my husband was working nights, and Little House was my comfort zone. When Michael Landon passed away, I felt as though I lost my own father. I can't miss, and won't miss the TV reunion special. The show was a gift to so many people and I hope my grandchildren will have an opportunity to view it and learn the values they taught.
I loved LHOP and i still watch it every afternoon.
We have enough cop shows on TV - how about a return to feel good family fare like LHOTP - Since it is so popular in DVD sales, why wouldn't NBC take a stab at a reunion show? I know my whole family (parents, spouse and my own children) would certainly watch it.
It was so great to see our old friends from Walnut Grove. I grew up loving the show and now my kids enjoy it just as much. It is on in our home four times a day. My daughter has read all the books including Laura's grandmother, mother's and daughter Rose's books. Thanks for the quick reunion.
Oh, what memories this brings back! I never missed an episode from the first one (and I can even remember coming in from playing at 12 years old just to see the first episode.) I love "dropping in" on a rerun and knowing immediately about the characters and storylines. Please, please, please - run this as a video on the Today show site. I had absolutely no idea that this was airing on Friday and I would have taped it otherwise.
