The ANN-iversary

Posted: Thursday, May 10, 2007 10:15 AM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Yael Federbush, TODAY Producer)

I was asked to produce a taped piece for Ann Curry's 10th anniversary with the TODAY show highlighting some of the key moments of her time on the show. WATCH VIDEO

What that entails is watching 10 years worth of footage of Ann reporting the news from the news desk in the studio, covering stories in the field and also documenting some of the lighter moments; as Al Roker pointed out to me, "like when Elmo gave Ann a hickey."

After the Senior Producer screened the final piece, he suggested that I book Elmo as the surprise live guest when we celebrate Ann's anniversary in the studio.

This, by the way, was great material to talk about with my girls, ages, 4 and 2.

My 4-year-old daughter was excited to hear about my conversations with Elmo and Cookie monster's publicist. My daughter pointed out that if we book a ticket for Cookie Monster, who is based out of Chicago, we should be careful that he doesn't eat the airline ticket. But I have to say Elmo's a bit of a premodonna. Elmo was unable to come to the studio because he's going to be in Italy. Seriously, I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried. That said, Elmo did do a lovely taped message for Ann to the tune of "You light up my life". He asked his buddy Cookie Monster to be there instead to present Ann with flowers and a fruit basket.

Back to the taped piece.

I interviewed Matt, Meredith, Al and yes Ann for the piece. It's always a little challenging to interview the people who host the show. After all these guys do this for a living. They are arguably, the top interviewers in the country, working on the top rated morning show.
What if there's a technical problem and bright red lines are recorded through out my tapes. Don't think it doesn't happen. It happened to me in 2000 when I produced Willard Scott's 50th anniversary with NBC. By some miracle we were able to correct the problem. And if it were not correctable, don't think it's so easy to re-schedule interviews with these guys. They are constantly being pulled in 100 different directions.

All the interviews went well. Here's a little glimpse behind-the-scenes of the interviews.

Before I interviewed Matt, the cameraman suggested that Matt button his jacket. Matt said he was more comfortable with it open. The cameramen sometimes want to make those suggestions to let the talent know they're looking out for them.

Matt's a real pro. He nails each question with the perfect answer. He sees Ann as a sister and you can tell he sincerely enjoyed talking about Ann's contribution to the show.

Before we started rolling on Meredith's interview, I told Meredith I was expecting my third child (She has three children of her own). We talked about the fact that NBC is very generous with maternity leave allowing mothers to take up to 8 months off. I learned from Meredith that Ann was welcoming when she first started on the show. Meredith says, "She made me feel, from the moment that I came here, that I was welcome... And made me feel that this was a safe place for me and a warm place for me and an extremely inviting place for me."

Al told me that after the interview he was going to parent-teacher conferences for his little guy. As Al says, I sit in one of those teeny tiny chairs the kids use as the teacher conducts a 45-minute discussion. These kids color and play all day what can they possibly be talking about for 45 minutes!"

During Al's interview I found out that Al and the others worry about Ann when she covers stories in questionably safe locations, such as war zones. You don't stop to think about that when you produce these segments but they do.

The only glitch was during Ann's interview in which I broke down in a coughing fit...eyes tearing up..the whole deal. That's never happened while I interviewed anybody else. How embarrassing! The coughing fit lasted a good 3 minutes, which felt like three hours. Luckily I had a Vicks cough drop handy in my bag. Ann was a sport and got me a glass of water.

The interview went well. I learned a lot about Ann. She calls her daughter, Mackenzie, Mack-a-doodle, She preferred to do the interview without much make-up, she sees herself as a field reporter more than a news anchor. And bottom line, she has a real passion for covering news stories that make a difference. And as she says "it's been a dream come true".

The Today Show has been a morning staple for my wife and I, along with a cup of tea, a bit of breakfast, and getting our kids off to school. Ann's has been a friendly (and beautiful) face, a true part of a very fun crew, and as the 10 year anniversary memories have shown, a good journalist who's not afraid to put herself out there, whether it be for notable interviews, seeing difficult places first hand, or, dressing up for halloween (Cher has nothing on you!). Thanks for all you do, keep up the good work! Congratulations, Ann!

I have enjoy watching Ann and all of her memorable stories. Her most poignant was handling cancer in her family. As a 10-1/2 year ovarian cancer survivor, your friends and family are your support. She truly exhibits professionalism, dedication, and sincerity consistently and I look forward to seeing her every morning! She shows she is a "real person" with real emotions. Congratulations Ann and best wishes for another ten years!

I JUST WANT TO SAY I LOVE TO Watch U ALL EVER DAY congrrtulations Ann u are the best when it come to news.
Dear Ann, Happy 10th Anniversary. I have never written anyone on any show, but because you are the best in interviewing people of all kinds your kindness towards people always comes through from your eyes and how you are so sincere. Your true feelings are so exposed that your hurts are my hurts. The Best To You and Your Family through out the world. If you are ever in Oceanside, CA. I would love to meet you.
Congratulations Ann, I love waking up to you every day. Your positive attitude and great smile and laugh put a good start to any day.You also cover some of the most important and often difficult to see topics of our time, you do it with such warmth and real caring that I almost always do more reaserch on the topic and find myself getting involved with it in some way. I don't think anyother journalist can do that to me.
Ann, congratulations and you deserve every loving comment you get. You are an inspiration to all of us who appreciate the women who don't disfigure themselves with botox and surgeries. You're wonderful in spirit and body.
Ann, as a native Angeleno, I used to run into you at the Pasadena Athletic Club. You're more beautiful now then you were then (nearly impossible) and I admire and respect all the hard work you do as a journalist. And I HAVE to ask you a very important question: Who designed the outfit you wore this morning on your Anniversary?? It's so amazing and really complimented your style and grace. I must know.
Ann Curry, You Rock! Thanks for 10 years on "Today" and please give us many more. You are an articulate, yet personable story teller. You're appropriately funny and classy too. Don't worry, Cher has nothing on you.
ANN IS 50??? That blew my mind. I've been watching the show for ever and never would have said that she is 50. You look great, Ann. And I love your pieces. Your warmth and caring always come through. You can tell that these stories, for you, are more than that. You do journalism -- and the world -- a great deal of credit. Here's to many more years of your wonderful work.
Ann, I have always sensed you are a beautiful person inside and out and watching you today just made me cry. Your humility, grace and empathy are an inspiration to me. You make a tremendous difference in the world. I don't have the need to be famous but I do have a deep desire to make a difference also. Can I help with shoes for these precious children in Darfur? Are sandals the best kind of shoes for them? How can I send them to you? Thank you for all you do and are going to do. Please know that everyone who knows you is blessed to have you in their life. Namaste'

Just like Katie couric, I watched ann's celebration on her 10th anniversary on today. I remember very well where I was in my little apartment, where I was sitted and how Katie celebrated her 10th anniversary. I also remember that time the key reporters like Peter Jennings were always on the air in he evening. I also remember ann's reaction to the war when it started. When I watched ann and wondered where is she from originary then confirmed to me she had a japanese parent and american, has 4year old kid,Life has really unfolded in a dramatic way from travelling with the first lady to becoming a nightly newscaster,to attending the Iron ladie's innaguration in liberia, travelling to Africa. Now I wonder where I will be in 10yrs and how it will be.You are a real proffessional and you have trully shaped our lives, Congratulations ann
just an short note to say great job, ann and keep it up..and from an person from an japanese background admire you so much...thank you....
I am one of Ann's biggest fans. She is my Idol! A highlight for me was when Ann blew me a kiss on a visit to NYC. Ann is an amazing roll model for young women everywhere. Keep up the good work!

Congrats Ann on 10 years. I think that you do a wonderful job on the Today show. I recently moved to France and still need my dose of the Today show each day - only now I watch you at night instead of the morning! Keep up the good work!
Good morning Ann: Is it possible that ten years have passed already? Why I can still recall the day you began as a regular anchor. Though it was sad to see Bryant depart as his position had wide historical significance, you and Matt were (and are) eminently qualified to carry on the fascinating tradition that is TODAY. Thanks for the calm voice in times like 9/11 that to this day we do not fully understand; and thanks for the humor as well, I have benefited from both. Here's to the next ten years! Sincerely, Welton
Happy ANNiversary Ann, I had the pleasure of seeing you yesterday @ 30 Rockfeller before you were getting on the elevator. You are adorable and you acted like you knew me. You are so friendly. Ann, happy 10th anniversary to a woman who is a "10" in my book. I have always loved the human side you express and bring to your news. It is a pleasure to watch.
Hi, ANN. Congratulations.!!! The Today show would not be the same without you! Hope you and your family enjoy this great milestone. You are always smiling, you look bright everyday. You guys are the best. I will keep watching. The best to you Have a great day! Celebrate. x0x0x
Hello Ann and happy 10th Ann-iversary. Ann you have been the best part of the Today show because it takes a real journalist to bring the worlds news stories to us. Everyone can tell that you choose the right words to get right to the point of a difficult interview with the leader in Dafur and Syria. Then you hold us, your audience, without blinking. That is a talent that must come from within because I don't think just training could create that. Your heart and conscience are also in the right place and the rest of the world can take a lesson from your actions. I remember how you and your daughter let you hair grow to a specific length then you cut it for wigs as a donation to cancer patients. The young girls and other woman to recieve something so personal as your hair also received your love and strenght to never give up the fight for life. Ann, in a world when we seem to only hear negative stories about celebraties it's simply does a person good to hear about all the positive acts of kindness you, Al (Lend-A-Hand), Meredith (Run for the Cure), and Matt, Natalie do for the good of mankind. May God bless you and all of the Today crew, in front and behind the camera today and always. One other thing I want to wish Louisa May Nyberg-Munson of San Diego a Happy Mothers Day. Louisa we women are all "Mom's" no matter what because we are in this gender together. I am a Mom of one Son and I would like to share my Mommy's Day wishes with you. But I can tell by your heartfelt comments that if you could deliver a baby into this world you would be the best Mommy and your child would grow up to be the best adult. Your words tell me that you possess all of the right elements to be a Mom. God bless you Louisa May and all women. I hope this makes it into All day Blog.
