Live From Studio 1A: Brooke Shields Q and A

This morning, Brooke Shields was on the show to talk about a new campaign that she is involved with, where she is promoting confidence and strong friendships among young girls. WATCH VIDEO. After her interview, she had some time and chatted with with me about a few more topics.

Q: What are your Mothers Day plans?

Brooke Shields: Well my husband is coming back from LA with my oldest daughter. I have the baby here with me, and he's in LA with her right now. So they're flying back so we can all be together. I don't know... we'll probably just go to lunch and all be together in New York City. I love being here. I miss New York.

Q: You have two young girls, and are now on a campaign talking about confidence and inspiration for young women. What do you see as the biggest challenges that your girls face as they grow up?

Brooke Shields: It's a real challenge between balancing the outside influences that they get with the at-home education that we're giving them about life. Everything gets thrown at them from the moment that they walk out the door. It's happening so fast that it's exhausting. It's a challenge to constantly keep up communication and discussion of what they are seeing outside of the home, and telling them what's good and what's bad. It's a daily struggle, and it's hard.

Q: What is your biggest sense of satisfaction from your last public campaign about post-partum depression awareness? What kinds of feedback have you received?

Brooke Shields: I am so proud of the dialogue that it has initiated. Not a day goes by when a person -- not just a woman -- comes up to me and thanks me for the work that I did, and tells me how it somehow changed their life. One woman just the other day told me that she carried my book around the house with her just as a source of comfort, much in the same way that it was a source of comfort for me to write it. I never could have expected the extraordinary reception that it received.

Q: Lastly, tell me about this pilot that you shot for NBC (called "Lipstick Jungle" from Candace Bushnell, the creator of "Sex and the City").

Brooke Shields: Oh they are just fabulous women! So great, so strong, so flawed, so honest. The way that Candace created these women makes them so much fun to play. And the icing on the cake is that they look fabulous!

I have been searching your site for the link to Brooke's project. Where can a mom get more information about the Chain of Confidence? I saw web pages flash on the screen but no name of web site given. Please advise. Thank you!
i can't wait to see brooke shields back on the screen! she is a wonderful classy role model for our american girls!
Hats off to Brooke. Keep it up. I spent all my free time with my daughter growing up and keeping her in sports, dance and homework. It is not easy but it turned out just great. She graduated from Clemson University, married a great guy, two boys and I am a single male proud father. GOD could have have chosen a better conclusion for all the hard work. Some parents just can;t keep up or stay in tune with their kids. It is tiring and burdensome to speak but look at the results of it all. Not sure what the answer is or how one gets this point accross to the public but I feel sorry for parents who neglect or feel too tired and busy to deal with kids. Your kids should come before anything else in your life. Teach them right, love them everyday and spend time with them and yet let them be themselves as well. You don't have to smother them but get involve and this will lead to better communications with your children. This is something you have to do everyday and not just for fifteen minutes. Spend evenings with them and weekends. Take local trips together. To get that well rounded social personality from you kids, demands your attention. You want respect, be a freind as well as a parent. Know when to be a friend and know when to be a parent. Dads with daughters, spend time with them. Do things together. Fathers and daughters have special bonds that must be developed. It's not a give me. Do this and you build character, self esteem. Sure they may let you down some but not really. The overall turnout will outweigh any small letdowns. Good luck.
A message to Brooke: You have been in the public eye for most of your life and I'm always amazed at how you handle yourself with such amazing grace--even during challenging times in your life. You certainly are an inspiration to anyone going through hard times-- to somehow get up everyday and gather the strength and courage to move forward. You are not only beautiful on the outside (that's obvious), but on the inside as well. If the world had more people like you, we would be much better off!!
WOW! Thank you Brooke for taking on this enormous challenge that all of us parents face daily. You are in a perfect position to help initiate positive change in our culture. God Bless You!

I would just like to write a message about Brook Shield's visit on the Today show. I didn't get to see the entire interview, because I was at the gym, but it really touched me. I am a 21 year old woman at University of WIsconsin-Eau Claire and I am a health promotion major. I have found that my only real passion is that I want to help young and older women to become confident and find their identies. I am frustrated with this country's idea of "health" and the messages that women across the country are getting about what they should strive to be. My goal for the future is to open some sort of wellness clinic where young women can come and learn to talk to one another, manage stress, find who they are and want to be, and be strong confident adults. I just don't know how to go about this exactly. We all have so many ideas and too often there those ideas of change sit. So, I guess all I really would like to say is that I appreciated the message sent on this mornings show and I hope it put some ideas into other people's mind as well.
Ms. Shields you are a wonderful role model and an inspiration to anyone who is going through difficult times. I have experienced clinical depression through out my adult life. I have two grown sons and two wonderful grandchildren. I am totally amazed how well you have handled yourself with such grace even during challenging times in your life. I pray that others who are going through difficult times will take notice of your actions and focus on how to help themselves and use their experiences in a good way. May God bless you and your family.
I am the Father of 4 girls and have coached girls in competetive sports for over 9 years. I love to watch the amazing confidence that they have from 4-9 years old. After this something happens and somehow we as a society have taken something from that wonderfull "I can conquer the world." My daughters are strong, and I promote that everyday. I agree that a large part of this is how involved you as a Father are in your daughters lives, and how you personally work to build relationship, which in turn greatly affects their self esteem. Kudos to Brooke and others working to bring back the "I can do anything," to women.
I agree with everyone else, an inspiration, a true lady. Hopefully Paris Hilton will ask for some advise!!!!
I was very interested when you talked about the subject of empowering youg women. I work with at risk adolescent girls and want to intergrate some of your program and thoughts into ours.Would love to have someone like you talk to them. Thanks for what you are doing, we all need help in helping them for their future to have a chance. Zenab Ali Mebed, Topeka Kansas.Child care worker for 41 years and still loving it.
