Live from Studio 1A: Molly Shannon Q&A

Molly Shannon appeared on the show this morning at 9:45 (WATCH VIDEO) to promote her new movie, "Year of the Dog." I sat down with the former "Saturday Night Live" star for a quick Q&A before she went on set for her interview with Al.

Here's some of our conversation:

Q: Everybody's talking today about Don Imus and his comments last week that resulted in a two-week suspension from his radio show and TV simulcast. You were on a very high-profile -- and live -- TV show, "Saturday Night Live," for several years. Was there ever a moment when you or someone you worked with said something, and everyone kind of went, "Uh, oh. That's going to be a problem"?

Molly Shannon: No. Never ever anything like that happened... [On the Imus subject} I find it riduculous that he said such things, but he just wants attention. And all of this talk is just enabling him to get even more attention.

Q: I asked this question of your former "SNL" colleague Tina Fey last week. We had the author of a new book called "The Feminine Mistake" on the show earlier this week. She writes about how young mothers are deciding to stay at home to raise their kids more and more -- and that by depending on their husbands financially, those women are opening themselves to potential problems down the road. You're a working mother of a two children -- what do you think about this issue?

Molly Shannon: Different things work for different people. I think it's really judgmental to be that self-centered to say, "This is what people should do." Different strokes for different folks. I did hear about a study on NPR that said that having two working parents in a household tends to be better in the long run for the children, but I think different styles work for everyone. Personally, for me, I'm not the kind of person who prefers [to be a stay-at-home mom]. But not everyone comes from the same situation that I do, so I say, "Live and let live." There's no magic formula to this.

Q: In the "Year of the Dog," you play a woman who becomes obsessed with animal rights activisim after the death of her dog. Are you an animal person? And what did you learn about some of the obsessions of pet owners?

Molly Shannon: I've always been a dog lover, but I developed an allergy to them at age 12. People that have animals feel very seriously about them, and their treatment of their animals is like love... My character becomes extremely interested in dogs and animal rights, and she becomes like a mother protecting her child. [Director Mike White] examines different characters who have different obsessions, like money, for example. He asks, "Is one [obsession] better or worse than the others?"

I did feel that the comments that Mr Imus made were politically incorrect, but I can't understand why this particlar situation has been blown so out of proportion. For all of the wishes for equality, why do we need the NAACP or the United Negro College Fund to single out the black communities? I grew up in south Georgia and have had many friends that just happen to be black. They have all worked hard for everything just as we all have.Do we have the Caucasian or White College Fund? Heavens no! If people want to get all riled up over langage and all, they should listen to much of the filth that is spouted out by some of the rap artists. Women are referred to by many derogatory names and disrespected in every way possible. Mr Imus was just using phrases that could be heard in many of these lyrics, but because he is white we throw out the racial comments. This whole sitation just boggles the mind.
Who ou there remembers the comments made by Howard Cosell many years ago. Appears as if we haven,t progressed too far. Yes, Mr Imus should go; we should also not allow rappers to to use the language they use to sell their music. Where have our morals gone.
I am sorry that Don Imus has been the sacraficial lamb here - as a long time listener, he has said a number of things about many people (all colors, all professions) - some I agree with some maybe I do not. He is not a racist - this is an outrage that you would think about firing him - he is an entertainer, people choose to listen to him. Oh come on for goodness sake, let's look at Saturday Night Live - a program that I personally choose not to watch bcause I find it's content offensive - it is my choice to watch or not. I am not calling press conferences to discuss that!!!!!
You know I have daughters and I would be upset if this was said about my daughters however why is it ok for Mr Sharpton and others in the entertainment industry to say racist and comments about whites and other races without much being said or done. MMMMM didn't Mr. Sharpton want to run for president). I blame the press and as well as Messers Jackson/Sharpton for blowing this a way out of proportion. They must not have had their names in the news lately. Yes it was wrong but enough already and lets toughen up a little. If this is the only hurtful, rascist thing that is said to or about these young ladies in life then they will be lucky. Let this be between the main parties to handle. You are flogging this to death. On every news and talk/magazine show this has taken up way too much time. You have a war going on with thousands of young men and women dying. Move on. Or better yet...turn it OFF
I have never listened to Don Imus or watch his broadcast but I know in my heart that what he said is not what is wrong. It is the fact that he is white and said it. If he were black and said it, nothing would have ever been said about it because blacks have freedom of speech not whites. Shame on you Don Imus for being white you know better than that.
I agree with Al, Imus must go, he should be fired! I am also shocked by many of the comments made.Lets stick to the subject at hand.Stop using the excuses about rap music, comedians, you cannot compare the two. Imus attacked a group of beautiful, talented women who did not deserve this.Come on people, how would you like it if your daughters, mothers, sisters, were attacked verbally this way on tv, or radio. You wouldn't. Lets get real, there is still a big problem with race realtions in this country, and a lot of it is because so many people are in denial about it. Lets leave Chris Rock,Dave Chappelle, rappers and anyone else that has nothing to do with the subject at hand out of this. Lets deal with Imus making his demeaning remarks about the Rutgers Womens Basketball Team. Have you forgotten about these young women? I think so! Also you can forgive, but I don't think we should forget. This type of thing should not go unchecked and there should be punishment, and a two week suspension is not it. Fire Imus!!!!!
Mr. Imus' comment is unacceptable and should not be tolerated. For that matter, nor should anyone else who publicly degrades another. Right now, he's the offender. We should all be accountable. Make Imus accountable and all support should be pulled to make it known that their are still people/businesses with moral regard and respect of diversification.
