Live From Studio 1A: Tina Fey Q & A

After Matt's interview with Tina Fey at 8:19 this morning (WATCH VIDEO), I sat down with her for a Q&A session in her dressing room.

Tina FeyFey (pictured left at the 59th Annual Writers Guild Awards) discussed a variety of topics, from her show, "30 Rock," to the balance between work and motherhood to former "SNL" co-star Will Ferrell's violent route to the top of the show business world.

Here's our conversation:

Q: You've had a lot of celebrity guests on "30 Rock," including our own Al Roker (WATCH VIDEO) in an upcoming episode. If you could get anyone to appear on the show, who would it be?

Tina Fey: I'd love to get Oprah on the show. We contacted her about doing the show, and we were told that she was in South Africa for three weeks. So I was like, "Well you can tell Oprah to call me when she gets back." We ended up getting Lester Holt to do it -- that's still flattering for Lester, right? Being second in line behind Oprah?

I'd like to get Ben Affleck. He's a pretty funny guy. Maybe when we hit it big, he'll do it.

Q: When you walk by the NBC Experience Store here in New York or visit www.nbcuniversalstore.com, you find that there is no "30 Rock" merchandise out there. What's the deal?

Tina Fey: They keep telling us that it's in the works. We keep saying, "Can't we just have a shirt with the logo on it?" I mean, high school choirs get this done. We have shirts, jackets and bags for our crew -- you can have these things made in a second. Who are the t-shirt people around here?

Q: We had the author of a new book called "The Feminine Mistake" on the show earlier this week. She writes about how young mothers are deciding to stay at home to raise their kids more and more -- and that by depending on their husbands financially, those women are opening themselves to potential problems down the road. You're a working mother of a 19-month-old -- what do you think about this issue?

Tina Fey: The ideal situation for a parent is one that no one has -- having a fulfilling job that requires you to work three days a week. It's better for the parents, because they get to spend time with the children and also have a source of pride and achievement -- and income -- outside the home.

I worked as a registrar for a day care center in Illinois, and I would see a lot of two-parent families in which both parents worked. For them to both have jobs and put their kids in full-time day care, they were almost losing money out of the situation. So working full-time isn't necessarily the best financial option.

I guess what I would tell women is to get their education first, before having kids. That way they can keep their options open down the road. I also think that it shouldn't necessarily be an issue just for women, that men should be part of the stay-home discussion too.

Q: Let's take you back to your "Weekend Update" days from "SNL"... The big political story today was about fundraising for the 2008 presidential race. Where's the comedy in that?

Tina Fey: The comedy for the Democrats is that they're blowing it again. They're showing off too much. They need to be putting a boring white guy out there to kind of get a hold of things. Once the boring white guy is out there, then you bust out the junior senator from Illinois who smokes and does cocaine.

For the Republicans... I thought the story about Rudy Giuliani's son was interesting. [That Giuliani's son, Andrew, would not be campaigning for his father this summer.]  Since he's been a little kid, he's been trying to mess things up for his dad.

I really like John McCain. He's an awesome dude and was a lot of fun when he hosted "SNL." I'd love to see a McCain-Giuliani "rage" ticket.

Q: Have you seen Will Ferrell's movie "Blades of Glory" yet, and was Meredith a fool for getting on the ice with him?

Tina Fey: I unfortunately haven't had a chance to see it yet...Will Ferrell is a dangerous man. If he thinks you're in his way in show business, he will crack your head open. He's the Jeff Gillooly of comedy.

As a fellow UVA Alum....I couldn't be happier for Tina Fey and all her well-deserved success. She's hilarious and she is putting herself out there as role model for other women to be successful with a career and a home life!!
What a funny lady!! I would like to know what it's like working with Tracey Morgan. Is he as funny off-camera?
Love 30 Rock. Alec Baldwin is great
Tina is hilarious, 30 Rock jsut keeps getting funnier and funnier. But man, I'm worried a McCain-Guiliani ticket has too good a chance of winning. I'm hoping for Gingrich to run with Jesse Helms as a running mate.
"30 Rock" is the best and the funniest show on television, bar none, with "Friday Night Lights" in second place. In "30 Rock," Tina Fey taps into the neurotic melancholy of so many intelligent and sensitive people, and we follow her stream of consciousness with constant shocks of recognition. The comedy is all over the map, and that's the joy of it: From one nanosecond to the next, we don't know what wackiness we're about to witness. Alec Baldwin is pure genius -- selfish and generous, kind and cruel, crazy and sane -- and he often communicates all this with just a facial expression. An hour at 30 Rock is the best therapy around.
I just hope that NBC is smart enough to renew "30 Rock". If they're this funny in their first year, I can't imagine what subjects they'll tackle down the road. Best comedy on TV!
I love 30 Rock!!! But we only WISH it were an hour. It was lost and almost not found by me when they moved it from Weds to Thurs, 8 to 8:30. What a relief when I learned it hadn't been cancelled. Alec rocks! You go, Tina!
As another UVA Alum, all I can say is Wa Hoo Wa..you rock girl. Keep it going!!!!
I look forward to 30 Rock each week. I love Alec Baldwin, Tracy Jordan has really created a great character and of course I love the whole ensemble. Please keep 30 Rock !!! and Move it to 9 p.m.
Tiny Fey is the Mary Richards of the new mellinium. Mr.Grant is Alec Baldwin! This is the most intelligent, funny show on tv. Therefore probably doomed but I hope not. PLEASE RENEW THIS SHOW NBC OR I WILL BE FORCED TO WATCH THE DEADLIEST CATCH OVER AND OVER AND OVER..............
I love the show. Tina Fey is the cleverest woman on television today. If NBC has any smarts at all, this show will go on for years. It's rare that I actually laugh out loud anymore since Benny Hill reruns have disappeared, thank you Tina!
I got so frustrated when the show didn't come up for 2 weeks. The only show i took the time out to watch. Thought am I crazy that I found this show so very funny and intelligent. Am so thankful so many people are for it.
Tina fey got it right - A show about SNL that is actually funny! Great sly political and social humor. It is so fast paced that the half hour is over almost before I know it. Also, she doesn't hog the spotlight - the whole cast is featured and developed - I guess she learned alot from the SNL gang.
30 Rock was renewed on Wednesday, folks. WoooHoooo!
This is a great show. It is right up there with: The office and My Name is Earl. Alex B is just the funniest person. MS - NYC
Finally a show to revive me from my post-Arrested doldrums!! My wife and I really enjoy it, get the word out on this, the only show worth watching on tv.
Tina Fey for President!!!
Way to go Tina Fey. I am a stay at home dad, so I definitely agree that men need to take a greater role in the raising of their kids. I also agree, that in many instances having both parents work is actually counter-productive. For us, it was simply a choice made when we first realized Peggy was pregnant with our son Liberty 16 years ago. Loss of one wage in return for time with our kids. We have never regretted it, even during the years I worked as a Social Worker averaging 20,000 a year. Now that I am the stay at home parent, I completely understand why many moms give up their jobs to be at home. I could not enjoy raising my two teenagers more, it is a blast.
