It's Gotta Be the Shoes, Right?

Posted: Thursday, April 05, 2007 7:00 AM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Dan Barbossa, TODAY Associate Producer)

I remember growing up playing basketball and wearing converse all-stars, no joke!  They had zero ankle support and barely any sole on them, but hey if they were good enough for my hero at the time Pistol Pete Maravich when he was my age then they were good enough for me.

Times are different today of course, I have sold out since then and purchased my share of Jordan's, I mean they were cool and still are cool and everyone was wearing them.   Sure my mom was a little apprehensive about buying me a pair of $120 sneakers when I was 14 and would grow out of them in a year, but hey she wanted to make her first born (and favorite) son happy. I mean what mother wouldn't.

This brings me to the story we did today on Stephon Marbury's line of shoes and clothing, Starbury. WATCH VIDEO  His new Starbury II shoes came out on April 1st and cost $14.98.  Yes $14.98.  Now let's just take a moment and compare that price to "hot" basketball sneakers available in stores now:

-The latest Air Jordans, the XX2, retail for $175.
-Allen Iverson's Reebok Answer X Pump Basketball Shoe runs $124.99.
-Lebron James' The Zoom Lebron IV from Nike costs $99.99.
-Carmelo Anthony's shoes, the Jordan Melo M3 cost $115 and
Converse has Dwayne Wade's, Wade 2.0 that go for $99.99.

So what makes the Starbury II's much cheaper than these brands?  Is it the quality?  No, cut down the middle they are all essentially the same shoe and the shoe has credibility as Stephon wears the shoes in all the games he plays in.  Well then what can it be, because it just sounds too good to be true right?

Is it greed? Is it the fact that parents will pay over $100 for a pair of their child's favorite basketball players' shoes? I don't have an answer for you.

What's special about the Starbury shoe line to me is that ANYONE can buy them.  I mean a kid who gets an allowance or has an after school job can afford to buy the shoes themselves without their parents help.  It's a social movement that is giving kids a quality product, endorsed by a guy who knows how hard it can be for a parent to get a kid those pair of shoes that he/she wants.

To quote the basketball analyst Dick Vitale, who when asked about the NCAA March Madness tournament why there were so many upsets, "Parity, Parity, Parity."

This shoe and the how it so accessible to everyone hopefully will bring parity to the basketball sneaker niche, where even a Cinderella can have a "cool" quality shoe for a reasonable price.

During your piece on the NORMAL priced sneakers Matt asked, "What can a parent do when 4 kids all want $150 sneakers?" Well, I have four kids and we have enough money to buy $150 sneakers for all four of them but because we want our children to be good human beings and not robots who follow trends so someone else can make a lot of money we just say NO!
I love this idea. By providing something that is affordable, you are giving more people the opportunity to have access to something they want. I do have a question. Where are these manufactured and are these made under human rights laws? I think it's great that parents and kids in the US have a shoe they can afford but is it at the cost of child labor in other third world countries?
We were taking our son to buy a new pair of sneakers, expecting to pay $60 - $80. When my son picked out a pair of Starbury's saying he loved them we had no problem with paying a whopping $15.00 for them. We even offered to buy him 2 pairs, seeing he is a 12 year old boy who goes through sneakers like going through a pack of gum. I commend Stephon Marbury for doing this and not taking advantage of the public.
please e mail me a web site or a contact #for those shoes. thank you.
Marbury's idea behind the cheaper shoes is great. However, I can't help but think that at $15 the people making the shoes must work in a sweatshop. I know that more expensive shoes are also (frequently) made in sweatshops but if he is trying to be "socially conscious" then he needs to make sure that the producers are treated fairly. I saw on the online article that he was commended by Nader for making it cheap while Nader has criticized James for the factory conditions of his shoe producers. This does not say that Marbury's aren't made in sweatshops, just that he treats the consumer better than most. I'm glad that now everyone can be trendy -- well, everyone except MAYBE the people that make these shoes (it hasn't been shown either way).
I think that would be wonderful to be able to afford the lates craze tennis shoes. Where can a person living in Virginia order a pair of these "got to have it" shoes.
You are a honorable man. Thank you for all of us who love to see heros are children can look up to!
Where can I buy these? (Please don't say Wal-Mart)!
As an employee at Steve&Barrys in Alliance,Ohio I can assure you that it is not just the parents that are crazy about the Starbury shoes. We have kids calling our store before we even open looking for a certain style or their size, and as a mother of three i can tell you I am extremely impressed on the impact these shoes have had in our town. Thank you Stephon Marbury and I am looking forward to seeing Ben Wallace bring something else to the line.
I'm not a fan of tennis shoes, but I'm getting a pair. It's the principle! Support Fair Prices and Wages! Thanks for not forgetting, STARbury! You made Mama proud!
Please help me find a store that sells these sneakers for the price ($15.00) that was in the story this morning on the Today Show on 4/5/07. I live in Bangor, Maine. I have someone that would be very interested in at least one pair. Any help you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Jim 91 0 pair
what a breath of fresh air this guy is. here's the man of the year for Time magazine. think about it... so totally unheard of, I had to read this twice. I salute you Mr. Marbury!
I have no reason to question Marbury's motives. If the shoe is as advertised regarding quality, I salute Marbury for his effort to change the outrageous basketball shoe "culture" in this country. It has been obscene for too long. The shoe thing got so out of hand that kids were even shooting each other over them. Thanks, Mr. Marbury. I have a new opinion of you.
It's call GREED and I applause Marbury for bringing sneakers prices back down to earth. Now everyone can afford to buy a pair of basketball sneakers and not have to take out a mortgage.
Ever heard of Dunkman? Shaq's shoes that have SOLD (past tense as in been available for a while now) for under $40? Seems the man who started it all is getting shafted from the credit.
My name is Gwenelle Johnson founder of GJ Productions and I think it's wonderful what Marbury is doing. Our son was in nusury school (15 years ago) and came home crying because the kids teased him for not having a name on his sneakers. I wrote his name all over his sneakers..now you have a name on your sneakers. This concept helps to confirm what Bill Cosby was trying to express a few years ago. I commend you!!! My family commends!!! I would love to have him come and speak to the youth in our area about values in his off season. Our website will be completed by the end of April. Please email us
God Bless Stephon! It's so nice to see a pro sports star using his celebrity for good. Hopefully others in the industry can follow suit. So refreshing!!!
How can we purchase a pair of these sneakers? My husband would like a pair
Love this story and glad it is getting out more.. We just visited a Steve and Barry's in Jersey this past weekend and purchased 4 pair of Starbury's. 2 for our 8 year old and 2 for my husband... We were jacked because just a month prior my son wanted a pair of Helie's (sp?) which would have cost us $65 bucks for ONE pair! SO yea, to find an affordable alternative is HUGE... Especially how fast my growing son's feet expands.. I mean he will be going up a size by years end, so paying $65 for a pair of sneaks that will last for 6-7 months is ludricrous to us.. So you obviously know we would never pay $100 plus for sneaks... All I can say is Thank God for Stephon Marbury and his unselfishness. Your mother raised you right! We have found a new shoe.. Stick around Starburys, for you have a definite customer in us for years to come!
WHERE IN THE HECK ARE THEY SOLD...I LIVE IN ST LOUIS MO 63119...ANY STORE IN MY AREA THAT HAS THEM? OR HOW DO I FIND OUT WHERE THEY'RE SOLD
i don't have access to video.. where do you buy them??? what stores carry them???
What a great idea! Your parents must be proud I know I am, it seems so many in the "sports world" only care about money it is great to see a "REAL MAN" show our society that you do not have to spend a weeks paycheck to look great. Thank-you for being a positive rolemodel.
I think this is an incredible move on the part of NBA all star Stephon Marbury. This shoe appeals to both kids & moms alike. They may only cost a mere $15 bucks, but the way they make a kid feel is priceless. Three cheers for Starburys!!!
i live in central florida. where can i buy these new sneakers?
I feel this is the greatest test to the shoe industry & I wish I would have done the same thing many years ago!! Just because there a a few parents who can afford $100.00 shoes not many can & almost everyone can afford $15.00 shoes! I would like to know where I can find these shoes in Wyoming? Are there any distributors in Wyoming? If not I would love to Distribute your product line. I have Rock Hard Fitness Family Fitness Centers & I would love to have your shoes in our product line!!!
I totally support Stephon Marbury and Ben Wallace's efforts. Parents have been under pressure from Nike and other companies, to pay outrageous prices for sneakers and other products, without the players speaking out. I'm one of the parents that have refused to fall for this nonsense of paying for over-priced products, and now I have an additional way to protest, by purchasing Starbury shoes at an affordable price.
Can I buy them in the Fort Worth-Dallas area? If not can I order on line?
hey all- you can get the shoes at any Steve & Barry's store. Go to www.starbury.com then go to store locator to find the nearest store in your area
Thank you Mr. Marbury - my son found out about these shoes from a friend at school and we immediately went to get a pair. Half the kids on his team wore them and I was happy that my child was proud to wear this brand as they are "so cool".
Wow! I think this is awesome! I usually have to spend $100.00 for my son's shoes. This is a great example of PAYING BACK. A+ FOR HIM! More professional atheletes should follow example!
I love the idea, I just wish they came in my husband's size (17). I am still plunking down big bucks to keep shoes on his feet. The good thing is that my two boys will be able to wear these shoes until their feet get as big as their dad's.
My family loves The Steve and Barry's stores. Not only are the shoes stylish but the kids love the clothing. My 12 and 13 yr old love the Hoddies the best. They are into college sports and now where then more than their winter jackets. Thanks to Marbury and Wallace too... Now my kids can dress in the urban/hip hop style they like with out breaking my wallet. Other Sport celebs should follow suit!
I agree with some of the other parents, somehow the idea of spending $150 for a childs sneakers is enough to make you scream. My son plays basketball any and everywhere, which means sometimes when he comes home his shoes are very dirty. Lets think together shall we. Shop for $150 shoes Saturday morning. Saturday evening you're putting things away and there they are as nasty as one can imagine shoes just purchased 12hrs ago at $150 and now you're affraid to touch them. OH HE-DOUBLE HOCKEY STICKS NO!!! Where can I find them in Vegas??
It is about time---as a single mom it is hard to buy the top name shoes for your son---No shoe is worth $150 and no name is worth that
I went to Steve and Barry's today and looked at the Starbury II. I could not tell them from the high priced shoes just yards away in the mall stores. My son is only 6, but I plan to get him a pair. I think that Marbury and Wallace are sending a clear message to kids as well as their NBA counterparts. You can be a star on and off the court. Let's hope others take up the call.
This is great news - but keep in-mind Shap has been doing this for years. Even got Exeter Brand Group (Nike) involved with the DunkMan shoe line.
Where can you buy these shoes in CT?
Stephon Marbury is a true hero and the most positive sports role model that I have seen in many years. Time Magazine should consider him for "Man of the Year". He certainly deserves it for what he is providing for kids - which is not merely a "cool" pair of shoes, but a message on how we should live our lives. What a tremendous individual.
Love this story. It's about time. Thanks, Marbury and Wallace, and anyone else associated with it.
I too applaud Mr. Marbury for creating an affordable line of shoes. My children are grown now but we did spend a large amount on shoes when they were in their teens, but with limits. I now have two grandsons and look forward to purchasing this line of shoes for them as they get older (ages 16 months & 3 months). We love Steve and Barry's for their affordable line of clothing. No one should have to be ridiculed or die because of their shoes. Thank you for being an example of good values and judgement. Thank you TODAY for highlighting modern day heroes like Mr. Marbury.
It's about time! Thank you Marbury if all celeb's would think this way life for parents would be so much easier. We all want to give our children the best and NOW we can. $15.00 tennis shoes, what an awesome refreshing idea.
Where can people in Arizona buy the "Starbury" I'd love to have a pair. Thank you Stephon!!!!!
I work in a juvenile detention center and we buy shoes for our kids here and either there county or parents have to pay for there clothing and alot of the parents can not afford to pay for shoes for one kid let alone 3 or 4. Currently we are paying 50.00 a pair of nike's which is real cheap now but these shoes are a much better deal for the county's to afford and also for the parents that were not able to buy shoes for there kids who now can afford something like this. My only question is where can I buy these? Please email me a link or email address where I can find these shoes.
I can't wait until fall to drive the 100+ miles to the nearest store to get these shoes! I hope what I read about quality is true, my kids have to have a seperate pair of shoes JUST for PE, and even with that little bit of wear I sometimes have to buy a second pair in a years time. And now my 4th grader can have a pair of basketball shoes for basketball, something I haven't allowed her to have the past couple of years because they were just to expensive. (although I many time regretted that decision as I was scrubbing shoes just before a game) Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you Stephon!! It is about time that not only are there sneakers ALL parents can afford, but that we are hearing something positive that athletes (of any sport)are doing to enrich the lives of those less fortunate instead of being fined thousands of dollars (that by the way most single parents don't make within a year)for some self-destructive behavior portrayed on or off the court or field. I hope a lot of your peers take heed to the example you've set.
My two sons and I have a pair of the Starbury One shoes. We have been impressed with the quality of the shoes. The kids have also purchased various Starbury shorts, jerseys and jackets which are all under $15. Many people have commented on the looks of this brand. Stephon Marbury deserves a big thanks for taking some of the insanity out of youth sport clothing prices.
I HAVE A 17 YEAR SON,WHO WEARS A SIZE 13 OR 14 DEPENDING ON THE SHOE.HE PLAYS BASKETBALL ALL THE TIME,SO HE WEARS THROUGH HIS SHOES VERY QUICKLY.IT IS VERY HARD TO FIND HIS SIZE SHOE HERE WITHOUT PAY ANYWHERE BETWEEN$150-$200 A PAIR.WHEN WE CAME ACROSS STARBURY SHOES ON ONE OF OUR TRIPS SHOPPING IN DETROIT MICHIGAN ,WE WERE VERY EXCITED,THANKFULLY MY SON HAD BEEN TALKING ABOUT STEPHON MARBURY,WE DECIDED TO PICK HIM UP A PAIR!NOW WE CAN GO AND BUY HIM 5 PAIRS FOR THE PRICE OF WHAT WE WOULD PAY FOR ANOTHER BRAND OF SHOES!AND I DO NOT HAVE TO KEEP ON HIM TO TAKE CARE OF HIS SHOES! HE HAS A PAIR FOR ALL OCCASSIONS! KUDOS TO STEPHON AND BEN!
you can find these sneakers at your local Steve & Barrys store. Go to Starbury.com and go to store locator and it will find the closest store. The store is great if you've never been to one. everything is less than $14.98 in the store
Finally someone with a product that is not all about the money! Congratulations to Stephon Marbury. Are these shoes available in the Louisville, KY area??
I THINK THIS IS THE GREATEST THING THAT A NBA PLAYER CAN DO, AND TO WATCH IT CHANGE SO MANY LIVES. WE NOW CAN SEE THAT SOME PLAYERS THINK ABOUT THE SMALL PEOPLE THAT MAKE THEM AS LARGE AS THEY ARE.IE THEIR POPULARITY EXIST BECAUSE OF THE FAN BASE. WE ALL CAN APPRECIATE HIS HONESTY ABOUT HIS OWN CHILDHOOD, SEEMS THAT TOO MANY OF THE RICH AND FAMOUS FORGOET WHERE THEY CAME FROM, AND NEVER LOOK TO INVEST INTO THE COMMUNITY OR THINGS THAT CAN HELP THE WORKING CLASS POOR. (WHICH IS NEARLY HALF OF AMERICA ) HOPEFULLY, HE HAS SET AN EXAMPLE THAT WILL LEAD TO SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL !!! LOVE AND RESPECT YOUR UNDYING FAN, DANA J TAYLOR ( DURHAM NC
