Your Hair Looks Great Today

Posted: Friday, March 23, 2007 3:16 PM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Amy Robach, Anchor MSNBC)

As soon as I was approached by Today show producers to get hair extensions for a piece on the growing popularity of extensions... I was excited! WATCH VIDEO It's funny because everyone seemed so nervous for me, like I was jumping out of a plane without a parachute!

Yes, I've seen the photos of a bald Britney Spears and the reports she had bad hair extensions, but I figured worst-case scenario I'd end up with a short bob for the summer. However, my experience has truly been best-case scenario. My hair is much thicker, a little longer, and so much fun to style. I lost a lot of hair following the birth of my second baby and I feel like I have my hair back from my college days, even a little more than I ever had.

My fear is that when they take these extensions out in a couple of months, I will fall into deep depression when I see how thin my real hair actually is, now that I'm used to all of these luxurious locks.

At work, most people initially didn't know I had extensions put in and I received a ton of compliments... "Your hair looks great today," etc.  When I told them the hair wasn't technically mine, they were shocked. It truly looks natural and I don't think anyone would be able to tell that I had extensions, unless I told them.

Now to the process itself. It took awhile, about 3 and a half hours. And yes, my head was sore for several days. It also took some time getting used to sleeping with them. The new hair is fused with a carotene substance (not glue) to strands of your own hair and there is a hardened bond that you can feel if you put your hand up to your head. The hair, by the way, comes from India and perhaps more notably from living people. It's also very expensive... Here in New York City the starting price for a full head of extensions is $1500.  A habit a bit too pricey for me to keep up, so in a couple of months, I'll be back to my less glamorous do!

Amy Why take them out? I am one of the lucky ones who has not lost any hair. No grey either. Like one of the March sisters in "Little Women", it is my "one beauty. Anyway, does one HAVE to take out the extensions? I am not versed on them at all. I do know that a great head of hair does wonders for one's confidence and that there truly are good and bad hair days. If you dislike your own hair, why not keep the extensions?
ps, regarding the expense. Won't the network pay for it? Obviously they want great looking anchor people and in the end it will cut your hair stylists expense since he/she won't have to spend as much time getting your hair looking great. Seems to me to be a legitimate business expense! It is worth a try!
Hi Amy. I think it's great you gave it a try. It just shows your great personality. You certainly don't need hair extensions, your a beauty in yourself.
So you fell victim to the postpartum hair loss too, huh? I just had my second baby in August...nine years after my first! So imagine my surprise when I discovered my receding hairline! That sure didn't happen the first time around. And now my hair is growing back, so I have this weird little stubble on the corners of my 'bangs-line.' Hard to style around, but I'm definitely glad it's growing back! I'm so glad you had fun on this story. I had a lot of my curiosity about the whole hair extension craze satiated...thanks for being such a willing guinea pig!
Hi Amy, I'm trying to get the name of the guy and the salon that you went to. Can you post it? thanks, Mary from Wisconsin
Please give info on where to go to get this done in the Washington, DC Baltimore, MD area. Or the place in NY. My wife is inteested
Hi Amy. I myself am loosing my hair after the birth of my girls. My question is will the extensions pull on what hair I have left since mine comes out easy anyway? I live in a small town in TN and it will be hard to find a hairdresser that will truly know what they are doing. Please tell my what to ask for. Normally I am not a vain person but I model and would die for people to find I am going bald.
Amy, Can you get just a partial, instead of full-head, done, just to give a little extra fullness? What was the name of the man who did yours? I wasn't able to write it down and have forgotten. You said he was one of the best. Many thanks. Margaret Cohn, New York, New York
Dear Amy, Do you have to go back to the hairdresser to have the extensions removed? Why do the extensions only last about 3 months? Will it pull out any of your own hair in the process? Thanks for being so brave and honest about hair loss. I'm having trouble too, but I'm older and I think it's natural aging; my grandmother and mother had thinning hair; so did my great aunt on my father's side. Jan, Memphis, Tenn
When you take the extensions out do you loose hair? How does new growth effect the extensions on African- American hair? Do African-Americans have to have it re-done with new growth? What is the typical length of time on African-American hair?
If anyone is checking back... Amy Robach here with a few answers to some of your questions. Yes, I have to go back in a couple of months and have my extensions professionally removed with a solution to loosen the bond. I'm told I won't lose the hair that's mine in the process. You can get a partial head of extensions, it just depends on how much more hair you want or need. I'm not familiar with hairstylists around the country who can put in extensions, but many of you asked about Ty here in New York. His name is Ty Holbrook, he's with the John Frieda salon and their number is 212-879-1000. Most major cities will have a salon with at least one stylist trained to put in extensions. The type of extensions that Ty put in my hair are called "Great Lengths". Hope this helps! Amy
Hi Amy: I switched from CNN to MSNBC full time after watching you and others,it was very refreshing to see people who seemed to enjoy their jobs AND not repeat the same stale news every five minutes. I actually started watching on 9/11 because I thought the coverage was much better. I worked at J&R Music for years on Park Row so I had a very keen interest in what was going on and MSNBC gave me the answers.
