Live from Studio 1A: Meet Lenny

Many of you long-time viewers have seen another member of our "family" here every morning on the plaza: Lenny.  We get more viewer emails about Lenny than any other member of our on-air team so we thought it would be nice to catch up with our Today Show superfan and give you the scoop.

Lenny has been coming to the plaza here at Rockefeller Center for thirteen years to see the show broadcast live.  You can see him every morning as the camera pans the crowd - he's the man in the hat who gives a thumbs-up to the camera.  Stage manager Dave Auerbach told me he's seen more people in the crowd ask him for pictures and autographs than any of our own hosts.  Check out what Lenny had to say when I caught up with him at 6:30 this morning.

What time do you wake up?
I wake up at 3:30 a.m.

Do you have breakfast?
No, I don't have breakfast, I don't particularly care for American food.  I have a nice cup of tea.

When did you start coming to the show?
I started coming thirteen years ago.

Have you ever missed a day?
Last year in December during the transit strike, I missed three days.

What was the biggest challenge you have overcome to get here?
Well, the transit strike, definitely.  I was going crazy not getting here.

Why do you come?
It's my morning therapy - I'm retired now and it's something I do with my mornings.  My neighbors think I'm coming to work when I leave my house.

What did you do before you retired?
I was in the military for many years.

Where are you from originally?
I'm from England originally.  I came here about eighteen years ago.

Do people recognize you on the street?
Oh yes.  On the street, on the subway, everywhere.

Do you have a top Today Show moment?
Yes.  Last year I got to chat with Tony Bennett.  That was my all-time favorite moment.

Hey Lenny!!! Wow...u r now officially part of the Today Show blog...wow... Doesn't it feel weird that u get asked for pics more than Matt Lauer?!?! But then again...u've been here longer than he has... LOL William
I've been to the Today Show several times and both Lenny and Manny are always so gracious with us "non-regulars". What a lot of fun they always seem to be having. I'm quite jealous
I think it is nice that the hosts and crew of the show take the time to aknowledge a devoted fan.
Talk about dedication! I also think it is great how the Today show has put him in the spot light a little, he deserves it!
Lenny is inspirational to all who are "retired". Thanks for sharing a glimmer of who Lenny really is....that was fun to see.
My fiancee and I have been playing Where's Lenny? for 3 years now. You should consider making him a MSNBC employee! Or...an unofficial Today Show mascot! We look forward to trying to find him every day!
It's funny, but when you are outside, I always check to make sure that Lenny is there. It's comforting. M P Mulvany, San Diego
I love seeing Lenny there every morning. I would like to meet him. I will be there at the end of May with a school group, maybe Lenny can save us a spot. I've often thought about sending him a shirt from my home state. I'll bring it with me in May.
I look forward to seeing Lenny every morning. I know if I ever get back to NYC, I'm going to do my darndest to get to meet him!
Your comments on Lenny are cool. He doesn't smile much, so it was hard to guess what he's like as an individual. He must love the show to ride public transit every morning. Good for you, Lenny!
I think that it is really nice that the today show thinks of Lenny in the way that they do. I don't know many people who could be there for 13yrs through all kinds of weather unless he's a mailman what a devoted fan.
It's very comforting seeing Lenny in the front row each morning. I actually make it a point to watch for him.
I think it's great that the staff and the hosts take time to acknowledge Lenny. You just don't find a fan that devoted everyday. He is an asset to the Today Show. Many of us look for him everyday in the crowd and we feel good when we do see him. Make sure you take the time to give Lenny some much deserved pampering.
Thanks! I've always wondered how Lenny gets a front row spot everyday, even for crowded concerts. Getting up at 3:30 a.m. must be the secret!
Thank you for the profile on Lenny. I can now watch the Today show in peace as my curiosity has been stisfied. Now I have to learn to spot Enstein.
Thank you for having Lenny appear on the Today Show each day. I start my day by looking for Lenny in the crowd. Lenny is a star and brings good luck to all those who view him. See him twice and you have double luck all day.
Lenny rocks! We think he has a HUGE CRUSH on Ann Curry!!!
