A Severe Case of "Affluenza"

Posted: Friday, March 09, 2007 10:03 AM by Jaclyn Levin

(From Janet Shamlian, NBC News Correspondent)

On a recent episode of NBC's "The Office", Dwight* committed quite the social faux pas.  At a cocktail party, he asked his host about the square footage of her home.

I had to laugh as I was in the midst of preparing this morning's Today Show story about money... and how questions like Dwight's* are considered bad manners in a society where we'll talk about sex before salaries. Whether it's how much we paid for our house or the size of the diamond on our finger, they are still taboo topics.

It doesn't stop us from wondering, and in the internet age... you no longer need to commit social suicide to find out. There are now websites that allow voyeurism into the world of other people's money.

We ventured out into Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood to talk with shoppers about why it continues to be such a secret subject. Many admitted they had a severe case of  'affluenza' -- a load of debt and anxiety from trying to keep pace with the finances of friends, who always seemed better off.   Keeping up with the Joneses, it appears, is alive and well.

Its Dwight! not Dwaine!
Janet, his name is Dwight Schrute (Rainn Wilson - Washington State native). The show the The Office. My favorite show on tv, next to the Today Show of course.
*Thanks for catching this. We changed it to Dwight.
Maybe we are ahead of our time or are just very open to each other but among my close friends we always talk about what we spend. We have never thought twice about asking "how much did you pay for that" or "this only cost me xx". No jealousy or bragging, just interest. Maybe it's because we are consummate shoppers and like to know if a bargain was gotten, even if it's a house or remodelling. We have even discussed personal finances and income with the same open attitude. It has helped over the years to make us think about our own individual investments, purchases and financial conundrums. However, there is something to say about sibbling rivalry because as open as my friends are (we live across the country), my sister is the opposite. All our lives she has refused to discuss anything that has to do with money/cost. Even though my parents were always pretty open too. Sibling rivalry, go figure.
